Monarq Asset Management Appoints Sam Gaer as New CIO to Advance Directional Strategy
Sam Gaer Joins Monarq Asset Management as CIO
In a significant move, Monarq Asset Management, previously known as MNNC Group, has announced the appointment of Sam Gaer as Chief Investment Officer (CIO). This transition is poised to elevate Monarq's Directional Investment Strategy, a pivotal aspect of the company's operations. With over 25 years of experience in institutional trading, market infrastructure, and systematic asset management, Gaer brings a wealth of knowledge to the firm that will support its next growth phase.
Monarq, a leader in investment management that employs multiple strategies, has established a strong track record with delta-neutral and market-making strategies over the last decade. Now, as part of its evolution, it seeks to broaden its directional capabilities. This strategic shift aims to tap into a wider range of risk-weighted returns by focusing on high-conviction themes, asymmetrical exposures, and tactical volatility overlays. These elements will ensure that the company can navigate ever-changing market conditions with precision.
The Directional Strategy has already shown robust performance owing to disciplined risk and capital allocation practices. Backed by global institutional capital within its funds denominated in USD and BTC, Monarq is now focused on enhancing access to Directional as a supplementary source of absolute returns within its investment platform.
In announcing Gaer's appointment, CEO Shiliang Tang expressed enthusiasm: "We are excited to welcome Sam to our team. His leadership enhances our ability to assemble asymmetrical returns and anticipate key catalysts in the digital asset space."
Prior to joining Monarq, Mr. Gaer was a co-manager of BlockTower Capital’s flagship fund and the founder of Katana Financial, a prominent systematic trading firm. His extensive background also includes roles as CIO at FINRA and EVP/CIO at NYMEX, where he spearheaded significant technological transformations and strategic initiatives. He holds a degree in business finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
