BAE Systems Achieves Key Milestone with Critical Design Review for U.S. Space Force Program
BAE Systems Advances with Critical Design Review Completion
In a significant development for national defense, BAE Systems has announced the successful completion of its Critical Design Review (CDR) for the Resilient Missile Warning Tracking (RMWT) – Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) Epoch 2 program. This $1.2 billion initiative, catered to the U.S. Space Force (USSF), is pivotal for enhancing missile warning and tracking capabilities, particularly against advanced threats like hypersonic glide vehicles.
The successful execution of the CDR is critical as it confirms that the program’s design adheres to the operational, performance, and safety standards required for the next phases of production. “Our achievement of this Critical Design Review was expedited through digital modeling and simulation, which stemmed from collaborative efforts and persistent dialogue with our customer,” commented Thai Sheridan, the Vice President and General Manager of Military Space for BAE Systems Space Mission Systems.
As the prime contractor for this extensive project, BAE Systems is set to design and produce ten spacecraft specifically for the MEO Epoch 2 mission. The company is also tasked with developing a robust ground system to manage the satellite constellation, ensuring efficient mission management, control, and operational solutions.
What makes this milestone particularly remarkable is the timeline; the review was completed just 14 months following the program's award to BAE Systems. Such rapid advancement underscores the pressing requirements of USSF support programs and is supported by long-lead procurements that the company secured over the prior year. Throughout the developmental process, BAE Systems focused heavily on in-depth design work, which enabled early production of essential program components. Leveraging its extensive design heritage and production experience, including innovation with the TREK spacecraft bus and leadership in model-based systems engineering, BAE is poised to enhance military capabilities with this program.
This initiative aligns with the Space Force’s overarching mission to deliver timely and reliable missile warning and tracking throughout the operational landscape, drastically improving the United States' ability to respond to ballistic threats.
Moving forward, BAE Systems plans to capitalize on its vertically integrated production capabilities as it advances through subsequent phases of the project. The company’s seasoned expertise with infrared optical payloads also plays a significant role in ensuring that these new spacecraft meet the comprehensive demands anticipated in various operational scenarios.
In summary, the Critical Design Review completion marks a pivotal moment for BAE Systems and the U.S. Space Force, reinforcing both entities’ commitment to ensuring national security through modernized defense technologies. The effective collaboration and strategic foresight exhibited by BAE Systems could very well set a precedent for future advancements in military aerospace capabilities.
