A Collaborative Recycling Initiative by Coca-Cola and FamilyMart
In an inspiring move towards sustainability, Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan Co., and FamilyMart Co. have officially announced a joint initiative aimed at recycling PET bottle caps. This program, which will debut in select FamilyMart locations across Adachi Ward in Tokyo, will transform the caps into environmentally friendly fans, utilizing recycled materials. The project aligns with the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and emphasizes community participation in the recycling process.
The initiative will begin in February 2026, with collection boxes installed in 20 FamilyMart stores. The collected caps will be repurposed, with the fan handles made from the recycled caps set to be distributed in these same stores starting from July 2026.
This development highlights both companies' ongoing commitment to sustainability, having previously engaged in various SDGs-related activities, such as conducting outreach programs, promoting LGBTQ understanding through educational events, and conducting experiments to enhance the traceability of bottle recycling. This current effort is yet another step in their collaboration, aiming to make the recycling process more accessible to everyday consumers by positioning collection points in convenience stores — locations frequented by the community.
The decision to recycle the bottle caps into fans is particularly timely, aimed at providing relief from the summer heat. The first distribution of the specially made fans will coincide with the popular Adachi Ward Fireworks Festival on May 30, where select stores will provide early giveaways. Returning to this summer staple, Coca-Cola and FamilyMart are not only focusing on environmental benefits but also fostering a sense of connection and support within the local community through fun and engaging recycling initiatives.
