Innovative Collaboration Project for Sustainable Fashion by Iwasaki Gakuen and Unilever Japan

Shaping the Future of Sustainable Fashion



In a significant push towards eco-friendliness in the fashion industry, Iwasaki Gakuen in Yokohama has partnered with Unilever Japan Customer Marketing to kickstart a project dedicated to developing sustainable fashion items. This initiative comes as part of the Yokohama Future Creation Conference, coinciding with the upcoming GREEN×EXPO 2027.

Background of the Project


The fashion sector significantly contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for around 10%. With rising consumer awareness regarding environmental issues, there is an increasing demand for sustainable materials. However, many consumers do not prioritize sustainability alone when making purchasing decisions. They seek products that also offer practicality and economic viability.

Recognizing this gap, Iwasaki Gakuen students, who are learning about fashion with a focus on business collaboration, have teamed up with Unilever Japan. Their goal is to create fashionable items utilizing recycled materials—specifically, used shampoo bottles collected from local citizens in Yokohama. This venture emphasizes the importance of circular economies and aims to strike a balance between sustainable practices and consumer preferences.

The collaboration aims to combine the innovative ideas and actions of fashion students with Unilever's expertise in the recycling of materials, paving the way for products that appeal directly to consumers while respecting the environment.

Kick-off Workshop Details


The project commenced with a kick-off workshop held on February 5, 2026. A total of 15 students were divided into three teams to explore Unilever’s recycling materials' properties. They brainstormed to identify potential product developments focusing on user scenarios.

Mentors were invited from related industries, including Yuki Sugita of LOVST TOKYO, who specializes in high-quality apple leather products, and Mo Ishida from the fashion brand HOUGA, renowned for its unique material use. They provided valuable insights on consumer engagement and product selection to the students.

Ideas generated during the workshop included gardening side pouches made from denim that gain character with wear and rain gear targeted for the GREEN×EXPO 2027 event. These creative concepts reflect a youthful perspective on environmentally conscious products.

Future Directions


Looking ahead, the project will transition to prototyping and creating product samples, presenting them at Iwasaki Gakuen events, and conducting test marketing. The overarching objective is to develop items that are not just sustainable but also attractive to consumers based on design, functionality, and story.

Ultimately, the initiative seeks to redefine consumer choices in favor of sustainable goods while balancing environmental considerations with economic benefits. Through this collaborative endeavor, Iwasaki Gakuen and Unilever Japan are committed to demonstrating their innovations at the GREEN×EXPO 2027, contributing significantly to the movement towards a true circular economy.
