Introduction

The Bulat Utemuratov Foundation has unveiled an ambitious project aimed at reviving the ecosystem of the Aral Sea, which has been devastated over the years. Once considered the fourth-largest inland body of water, the Aral Sea has drastically shrunk, losing nearly 90% of its area. This decline has led to severe ecological consequences, including the formation of hazardous salt marshes.

Background of the Aral Sea Crisis

The disappearance of the Aral Sea is one of the most profound environmental disasters in contemporary history. Polluted dust from the seabed is blown for thousands of kilometers, reaching far-off regions like the Arctic and the Himalayas. This airborne dust harbors toxic substances, adversely affecting soil, water, and air quality, thereby jeopardizing both human health and agricultural productivity in surrounding areas.

The Initiative

Launched on October 30, 2025, the project aims to restore ecological balance to the region through the use of pioneering E-seed technology developed by the University of California, Berkeley. This innovative approach employs drones to distribute seeds in biodegradable materials, facilitating efficient and effective planting with minimal manual effort.

Collaboration for Change

The project is a collaborative effort involving notable partners: the University of California, Berkeley; the Executive Directorate of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS); and Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University. Their collective expertise and resources aim to lay a robust foundation for the restoration process.

The Restoration Process

The restoration endeavor will commence with pilot testing on a one-hectare site scheduled for March to April 2026. If initial tests yield adequate seed survival rates, expansion across an additional 50 hectares will follow in 2027. The overarching goal is to stabilize the ecosystem by 2040 and enhance the local microclimate.

Funding and Support

A budget of approximately USD 600,000 has been allocated for this pioneering project, which aligns with Kazakhstan's dedication to restoring the Aral Sea region. This initiative is seen as a crucial step in the country's chairmanship of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea from 2024 to 2026 under President Tokayev, emphasizing the importance of creating green spaces over more than a million hectares of desiccated land.
