He has been an influential figure in the world of academia as a lecturer and adjunct professor at Yale University since 1998, where he has shared his knowledge in the Department of Economics and the School of Management. Additionally, he was a visiting professor at Yale-NUS College in Singapore, demonstrating his versatility and international appeal.

As a notable business leader, Schmertzler is currently the chairman of PTC Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: PTCT), which focuses on developing treatments for rare genetic disorders. Moreover, he holds executive positions at Berryville Holdings and Dispel, LLC, where he oversees the development of essential protection and communication systems for the defense and intelligence communities.
