A Night for Good: The Goodwill Gala 2025
On May 20, 2025, the Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey (Goodwill NYNJ) held its fifth annual gala at the global headquarters of Tapestry in Hudson Yards. This year’s event brilliantly united professionals from fashion, technology, and philanthropy, all in support of a vital cause: promoting job training and inclusive employment.
Co-hosting the event were Felita Harris, Executive Director and Co-Founder of RAISEfashion, and acclaimed fashion designer and culinary artist, Peter Som. Their engaging presence set an inspiring tone for the evening, which was dedicated to recognizing outstanding contributions towards fostering an inclusive workforce and promoting sustainable fashion.
Throughout the night, Goodwill NYNJ honored two remarkable figures: Brian Fetherstonhaugh received the Visionary Leadership Award, acknowledging his long-standing commitment to Goodwill since he joined as a board member in 1990. Shelly Lazarus, the Chairman Emeritus of Ogilvy, presented the award to Brian, noting his significant impact over the years. In addition, the prestigious Corporate Leadership Award was given to Synoptek, a leading systems integrator and managed services provider, in recognition of their efforts in advancing digital equity and workforce inclusion. Synoptek’s CEO, Salil Godika, expressed pride in serving communities and lifting those in need through impactful work.
One of the evening's highlights was an exclusive fashion presentation featuring renowned designers like Collina Strada, LAPOINTE, Romeo Hunte, and Andy Yu, all well-known for their creative flair and commitment to sustainability. Each designer shared insights into their mission and how they wove themes of empowerment and sustainability into their work.
Sally LaPointe, founder of LAPOINTE, articulated her commitment to empowerment through fashion, stating, "Fashion does not have to be complicated, unattainable, or intimidating.” Her collection showcased vibrant monochromatic designs that inspired confidence among wearers. Andy Yu championed sustainable practices, noting, “Giving new life to second-hand pieces lets creativity shine without adding waste,” emphasizing a responsible approach to fashion.
The event also featured an online auction of upcycled garments from the showcased designers, giving attendees a chance to acquire unique pieces while supporting Goodwill NYNJ's job training and placement programs.
Goodwill NYNJ’s CEO, Katy Gaul-Stigge, reiterated the organization's mission of increasing access to employment opportunities while advocating for sustainable fashion practices.
"At Goodwill NYNJ, we believe investing in people and the planet creates lasting change," Katy stated.
The gala was a resounding success, raising an incredible $586,000 to advance programs aiming to empower individuals across the New York area. This funding will support job training and placement services that help individuals overcome barriers to employment.
The history of Goodwill NYNJ dates back over a century and has continuously focused on uplifting communities and providing essential resources to those with disabilities or other work-related challenges. By teaming up with innovative companies and creative minds, Goodwill continues to shape a brighter future for many.
