Experience the Art of Film Photography: Launch of 'Memory of Film'

Introducing 'Memory of Film'

On June 1, coinciding with Photo Day, Tojo Photo Studio is excited to announce the launch of 'Memory of Film'. This exquisite collection showcases vintage 4x5 inch black and white films and photo prints as a single piece of art. Each album embodies the richness of grey hues, with translucent inverted images and subtle traces of craftsmanship, offering a portal into the unseen world of memories.

Photography has always been an intersection of light and time—each image a delicate container of experiences waiting to be released. Unlike digital formats, which lend themselves to instant gratification, film photography is a slower, contemplative journey that transforms moments into lasting memories. As we continue to live in an age dominated by immediacy, the art of film photography invites us to embrace the value of 'time to see'—a contrast to the instant outcomes we usually expect in today's fast-paced world.

With film, every click of the shutter carries weight; using a single frame compels us to focus deeply on the essence of the image at hand. In this era of overwhelming visual saturation, each photograph becomes significant through a process that celebrates the nuanced interplay of light and shadow, composition, expression, and atmosphere.

The Essence of Film Photography Today

In this digital age, the question arises: what value does film photography hold? The answer lies in its ability to capture the nuances that exist between binary states of 0 and 1—an ambiguous space filled with organic depths, smooth gradations, and a palpable sense of atmosphere. The hand-crafted traces left in the development and printing process speak quietly but profoundly to the craftsmanship that underlies these photographs.

Through the lens of a large format camera, film is loaded one sheet at a time, as was done in the early days of cinema. The process involves carefully checking compositions under a loupe before exposure, making the act of photography itself a remarkable experience. Once the shooting is completed, our skilled photographers develop, retouch, and print the images in-house, ensuring a high standard of quality. The monochromatic photographs display a rich tonal variety and depth that can only be achieved through this traditional method, contrasting the simplified colors often seen in digital formats.

Each negative retains the fingerprints of human engagement—artistic touches that predate modern correction software—telling a story of craftsmanship and dedication. The collection comes beautifully packaged, allowing you to contrast the light passing through film against the captured image, enabling an immersive experience of memory and time.

The Artistry Behind 'Memory of Film'

Included in your purchase are a monochrome photo shoot, development, retouching, a single silver halide print, and a specially crafted presentation case—all crafted at Tojo Photo Studio. The price is set at ¥73,700 on weekdays and ¥84,700 on weekends and holidays. Reservations can be made online or via phone, with delivery expected approximately eight weeks after the shoot.

For those wishing to share or commemorate special moments, this project serves as an exquisite gift or personal keepsake.
