A Valentine's Day Emergency Unfolds

As Valentine's Day approached in 2025, Abigael "Abby" LaBonte from Easthampton, Massachusetts, prepared to celebrate the holiday with a small heart added to her usual manicure, a small yet cheerful gesture. She had no inkling that this simple expression of love would soon become deeply symbolic.

On February 14, Abby was feeling under the weather, experiencing flu-like symptoms that she believed just needed rest. She decided to turn in early, attempting to sleep off whatever was ailing her. However, around 11 p.m., Abby's condition worsened, prompting her husband Joe LaBonte to take her to the emergency room after she expressed how poorly she felt. Joe swiftly contacted his mother to watch over their two sons, Jake and Nate, while he drove Abby to the hospital. However, disaster struck before they were even close to the medical facility—Abby collapsed in the car, and Joe immediately called 911.

A police officer arrived on the scene swiftly and began life-saving measures until an ambulance could take Abby to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. There, the Heart and Vascular team discovered Abby was suffering from a massive heart attack at the young age of 41.

Teamwork and Quick Thinking

Jonathan Hurley, one of the nurses on Abby's case, described the urgent atmosphere upon his arrival. "It was very hectic," he recalled. "We had to get all the medications up and running. She was declining fast, so we got the surgeons and perfusionist involved for bedside interventions that require immense skill and coordination." The team focused solely on stabilizing Abby enough to transport her to Boston.

Abby was put on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), a type of life support used when the heart can’t function properly. Plans were made for her to be airlifted to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for heart transplant evaluation, but inclement weather prevented this and she had to be transported by ambulance instead.

The journey to Boston was fraught with peril. Accompanying Abby was Joshua Williammee, the perfusionist monitoring the ECMO machine. The drive, made in the midst of a winter storm, was a harrowing experience as Abby endured seven additional heart attacks along the way. Joshua later admitted it was one of the most nerve-wracking drives of his career, as he battled the unknown of Abby's fate.

A Glimpse of Hope and Recovery

Once she arrived in Boston, Abby began the arduous journey to recovery. She learned she needed a heart transplant, which she received a few weeks later in April. Although her health had taken a severe turn, she was on the path to wellness. Months later, by October, Abby had made significant progress in her recovery and felt compelled to return to Baystate Medical Center. She wished to express her gratitude to the team that had played such an integral role in saving her life.

The reunion was emotional as she finally met the doctors, nurses, and perfusionists who had kept her alive until she could receive a new heart. "Just meeting people I have never met before, people who literally kept me alive, I will never forget this day," Abby expressed, gratitude resonating in her words. It was a significant moment not just for her, but for the medical team as well, reaffirming the impact of their dedication.

John, another team member, reflected on the experience, "It’s a powerful reminder of how our work contributes to someone’s life story. It’s incredibly rewarding to see someone’s recovery firsthand." Joshua echoed similar sentiments, noting the rarity of encountering the outcomes of their efforts in such high-stakes situations.

Embracing a New Life

Today, Abby continues to recover at home in Easthampton, engaging in physical and occupational therapy to regain her strength. Her family has stepped up in supports—her husband and children taking on tasks around the house that seemed trivial before but now feel monumental. "They've been doing things like laundry and emptying the dishwasher, and it turns out they’re big tasks," Abby quipped.

Abby’s mother was also a constant presence during her recovery, assuring she was never alone. Her son Jake took the opportunity to thank the hospital staff, declaring, "I will never forget this. Thank you so much."

Reflecting on her harrowing yet miraculous journey, Abby expressed her gratitude not only for the medical team at Baystate but for the deeper insights she gained about the people in healthcare. "I want to tell people that hospitals are miracles," she said.
