What is Frescobol?

Frescobol is a unique and engaging beach sport that originated from Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro in 1945. This sport has gained popularity around the world, especially among beach-goers who appreciate its cooperative nature. Unlike traditional competitive sports, frescobol focuses on two players working together to keep the rally going, rather than competing against each other. The game lasts for five minutes, with players maintaining a distance of seven meters to strategize while they play. This collaborative style has earned frescobol a reputation as a "sport of empathy."

The JFBA is actively working towards the unification of international rules and is in basic agreement with the Rio Frescobol Federation (FEFERJ) for the establishment of the first-ever global organization, the UAFI, which is targeted for October 2025. In Japan, the sport continues to grow, with 29 registered regional clubs and five recognized student organizations.

Join us in celebrating this vibrant sport and be a part of the beach sports culture in Japan!
