Maryland Teamsters Unite for Strong First Contract at Zum Transportation

Maryland Teamsters Rally for Strong Contract

On September 2, 2025, over 300 members of Teamsters Local 570 gathered in Jessup, Maryland, to demonstrate their commitment to securing a robust first contract with Zum Transportation. This demonstration showcased unity among bus drivers, van drivers, trainers, and attendants who play a crucial role in transporting students for Howard County Public Schools.

Sean Cedenio, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 570, addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of these essential workers. “Our members at Zum transport this community’s children every day, ensuring their safety and well-being. It's high time for Zum to recognize their contributions by negotiating a fair and timely first contract,” Cedenio stated, expressing that the leadership in Howard County must ensure that this contract reflects workers' worth.

Earlier in 2025, the workers made a significant decision to unionize, voting overwhelmingly (four to one) to join the Teamsters as a means to advocate for a contract that accurately represents their efforts and provides them with the respect they deserve. Tanyia Watts, a bargaining committee member, expressed the sentiment of many when she stated, “We deserve a living wage. Despite working full-time hours, our pay remains only part-time, which is clearly insufficient.” She emphasized the love the drivers have for their jobs and the children they transport, yet reiterated the necessity for fair compensation.

As negotiations progress, wages remain a pivotal issue, with the employer agreeing to implement retroactive backpay to the start of the school year, contingent upon contract ratification. Local 570 had a recent meeting with Zum representatives and has proposed additional bargaining dates throughout September.

Local 570 serves a diverse array of workers across various industries in Baltimore and its neighboring communities, and remains steadfast in advocating for fair labor practices. For more updates, visit their website at team570.org.

This rally signifies the rising awareness and organized efforts among transportation workers in Maryland, fostering solidarity to ensure that their rights are secured and valued. In a time where worker rights are under constant scrutiny, the collective actions of the Teamsters at Zum Transportation underscore the importance of standing together in pursuit of justice and equity in the workplace.
