Shentel Enhances Broadband Access in Shenandoah County for Thousands
Shentel's Broadband Expansion in Shenandoah County
Shenandoah Telecommunications Company, commonly referred to as Shentel, is making significant strides in improving internet connectivity within Shenandoah County, Virginia. Recently, the company announced the extension of its high-speed, gigabit internet services to an additional 5,000 households. This ambitious project is part of a larger initiative aimed at strengthening rural infrastructure and ensuring that residents have access to reliable internet services.
Funding and Community Impact
The project, which has a budget of $47 million, is predominantly funded through the Virginia Telecommunication Initiative (VATI), a program designed to facilitate broadband expansion in rural areas. Shentel is matching this funding with its capital investment while also receiving substantial support from Shenandoah County.
Doug Culler, the Director of Network Services for Shenandoah County, expressed enthusiasm over the progress made through this partnership. He highlighted that the broadband upgrade is crucial for facilitating opportunities in various sectors including education, healthcare, and overall economic growth.
Bridging the Digital Divide
Josh Stephens, Chairman of the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors, commended Shentel's long-standing commitment to the region since its inception in 1902. He emphasized that modern internet services would significantly benefit both current residents and future generations. The expansion not only serves the needs of today but also ensures that the county remains a competitive and connected community.
