Discovering the Beauty of Kutani Ceramics
The lifestyle shop 'Watashi no Heya' has been showcasing the remarkable works of master potter Shoji Yoshioka for nearly twenty-five years. Known as the 'Magician of Kutani', Yoshioka is a certified traditional craftsman whose distinctive hand-painting and vibrant works elevate everyday dining experiences. His pieces blend a playful aesthetic with a sophisticated depth, adding a touch of spice to modern tablescapes.
A Meeting of Minds
Our journey with Yoshioka began when he was part of the renowned Kutani Seigan pottery studio, famous for nurturing many ceramic artists. Since 2002, his long-selling blue-and-white porcelain 'Marumon' has captivated clients, leading to an array of unique and joyful tableware produced exclusively for 'Watashi no Heya'. Driven by a relentless quest for quality, Yoshioka continually evolves his creations, introducing pieces like the 'Kutani Colorful Square Plate' and the modern 'Andepandan', each combining practicality with comfort. This spring, the beloved 'Marumon' transforms aesthetically into 'Iroe Kasarasa', ensuring its enduring appeal.
About the Artist
Graduating from the Kutani Ceramic Training Institute in Ishikawa in 1994, Yoshioka studied under the renowned Yamamoto Chōza, mastering the art of hand-painting. He honed his skills further at the Kutani Seigan studio before becoming an independent creator in 2008. In 2012, he earned certification as a traditional craftsman, dedicating himself not just to art but to training the next generation of potters as well.
Introducing the New Spring Collection: 'Iroe Kasarasa'
'Iroe Kasarasa' encapsulates the traditional form of 'Marumon' while introducing lively overglaze designs in lieu of the typical underglazing. This series features unique patterns inspired by traditional textiles, presenting a delightful mix of Japanese motifs and oriental aesthetics. With a subtle aqua accent color, these modern Kutani pieces evoke a refreshing and vibrant essence.
The Yoshioka Collection
Since 2002, the original series based on the timeless 'Marumon' retains its classic charm while incorporating Margaret flower motifs and geometric patterns. Come April 2026, the 24-year-old series will transition to 'Iroe Kasarasa', marking the end of the traditional 'Marumon'. These beautifully crafted items will only be available as long as current stock lasts.
Everyday Use
Imagine savoring your summer cold noodles alongside fried eggplant served on these exquisite plates. The striking blue 'Marumon' patterns beautifully illuminate the food, making your meals not just satisfying but visually appealing. The vibrant colors of Kutani ceramics harmoniously merge with modern sensibilities, thanks to their thoughtfully designed lightweight structure and soft shapes, making them perfect for both casual dining and special occasions.
Another Scene from Daily Life
Picture a serene evening filled with soothing music or an engaging book, glass of chilled sake, and delectable snacks plated on Yoshioka's 'Kutani Hakake' small dishes. These moments allow you to unwind and enjoy tranquility amidst the day's hustle.
The 'Andepandan' series draws inspiration from the soft allure of 17th-century slipware, showcasing pieces that float artistically on the table. Each design captivates with its unique brush strokes, transforming everyday meals into a celebration of art. With versatile monochrome shapes and distinctive patterns, the 'Andepandan' collection enhances the rhythm of your dinner table, whether for hearty stews, fried rice, or curry dishes.
