MedStar Health's Commitment to Wetland Restoration



In an exciting step towards ecological restoration, MedStar Health has kicked off a major initiative aimed at restoring wetlands on the campus of MedStar Harbor Hospital. This project, which targets more than 2,000 linear feet of degraded shoreline along the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River, is set to reestablish approximately seven acres of diverse coastal ecosystems. As part of the broader Reimagine Middle Branch Plan adopted by the City of Baltimore in 2023, it focuses on strengthening the area’s resilience against flooding, improving water quality, and revitalizing essential green spaces that used to flourish along South Baltimore's waterfront.

Keith Donaldson, president of MedStar Harbor Hospital, articulated the essence of the project by stating, "This project is an investment in our community's health and future." The initiative aims to absorb storm surges, filter pollutants from rainwater, and restore the natural habitats essential for local wildlife. By doing so, it anticipates reducing the frequency and severity of floods that have historically impacted the region, and significantly improving the water that flows into the Chesapeake Bay—a vital body of water for the surrounding ecosystem.

The ambitious nature of this project was made possible through a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders, including the South Baltimore Gateway Partnership (SBGP), GreenVest, LLC, and the dedicated team at MedStar Harbor Hospital. As Brad Rogers, the executive director of SBGP observed, MedStar’s leadership has been pivotal in propelling this venture forward—this is indicative of how local institutions can take on vital roles in environmental stewardship.

Situated within the Community



The MedStar Harbor Wetlands Project will not go unnoticed by the community, as it involves both onsite work and potential temporary closures. Construction activities will take place from Monday to Friday during regular business hours, which may lead to some noise and minor truck deliveries. However, major traffic disruptions are not expected, and measures have been taken to minimize inconvenience, including temporary closures of the parking lot south of the hospital and a short section of the adjacent trail.

Before this initiative began, the wetlands in this section of the river had largely vanished. The restoration focuses on reinvigorating the habitat for fish, birds, and native plant species, guaranteeing a recovery of biodiversity that is crucial for a healthy local ecosystem.
