Kaiser Permanente Introduces a Revolutionary Energy Solution



Kaiser Permanente has marked a significant milestone in renewable energy with the launch of the largest hospital-based microgrid system in the United States. This initiative, introduced at the Ontario Medical Center in Southern California, is designed to not only reduce the hospital's carbon footprint but also enhance its emergency power capabilities and overall energy efficiency.

A Step Towards Sustainable Healthcare



The newly inaugurated microgrid system boasts impressive capabilities with 2MW of solar energy generation and 9MWh of battery storage. This infrastructure directly contributes to California's ambitious goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by the year 2045. Additionally, the system encompasses a 1MW fuel cell, allowing the hospital to tap into clean energy sources as part of its day-to-day power needs.

The microgrid will serve as a primary power source for the hospital during regular operations and will also act as a backup power solution during grid outages. With the capacity to meet all emergency power requirements for up to 10 continuous hours, this system exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to energy management in healthcare.

The organization aims to cut its overall emissions in half by 2030 and target net-zero emissions across all operations by 2050. Previously, California hospitals primarily relied on diesel generators for backup power. However, Kaiser Permanente's Ontario microgrid diverges from this norm by enhancing the hospital’s energy independence and minimizing operational costs through innovative energy management practices. The automated control system operates by storing renewable energy during low grid prices and discharging it when grid energy costs rise.

With expectations that the solar system will offset around 650 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, this microgrid would generate approximately 3,300 MWh of zero-emission electricity, enough to power 275 homes for an entire year.

Health and Environmental Impact



Research has consistently highlighted the negative health impacts associated with prolonged exposure to air pollution, particularly from fossil fuels. Bechara Choucair, executive vice president and chief health officer at Kaiser Permanente, noted the organization’s responsibility to lessen pollution-related health risks: “As health care providers, we have both the obligation and the opportunity to protect our members’ health and prevent environmental harm,” he explained.

The project has received essential funding through an $8.3 million grant from the California Energy Commission, supplemented by contributions from partners such as Ameresco. Since introducing California's first renewable microgrid at its Richmond Medical Center in 2017, Kaiser Permanente has been at the forefront of exploring innovative energy solutions. Now, with the Ontario Medical Center's microgrid, Kaiser Permanente continues to set the standard for sustainability in healthcare.

Georgina Garcia, senior vice president and local area manager, expressed optimism that other institutions might follow suit in adopting sustainable energy practices: “If we can inspire fellow hospitals to embark on similar paths, we can collectively lessen our industry's environmental impact and foster healthier communities in the Inland Empire.”
