30 Years After Its Release, Naohisa Inoue's Works Shine in Sendai

Naohisa Inoue's Exhibition Celebrates 30 Years of Studio Ghibli's Classic

In 2026, we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the beloved Studio Ghibli film, 'Whisper of the Heart.' The film's enchanting backdrop was brought to life by the talented artist, Naohisa Inoue. To celebrate this milestone, an exhibition showcasing his original artwork and new prints will be held from July 15 to July 21 at the Sendai Mitsukoshi Art Gallery.

A Glimpse of Ibarado

Naohisa Inoue, who graduated from Kanazawa College of Art in 1971, started his career in advertising before becoming an artist. Years later, he coined the name “Ibarado” for his hometown, Ibaraki City, much like Kenji Miyazawa referred to Iwate Prefecture as “Ihatov.” Inoue created a whimsical universe where magic and fantasy intertwine, filled with characters reminiscent of classic tales. His picture book, 'The Journey to Ibarado,' was awarded the Kodansha New Picture Book Award in 1996, solidifying his dreamlike artistry.

In 1995, renowned director Hayao Miyazaki invited Inoue to create background art for 'Whisper of the Heart.' Inoue’s artistic vision perfectly encapsulated the film's emotional core, particularly in the segment known as 'The Story Given by Baron.' This collaboration not only highlighted his unique abilities but also helped to introduce his imaginative world to a broader audience.

Inoue's Continuing Influence

Following his involvement with 'Whisper of the Heart,' Inoue contributed to the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, creating murals and collaborating on a short animated film based on his picture book 'The Day We Bought a Star.' His works have garnered acclaim domestically and internationally, with showings in the museum's theater and Ghibli Park's Orion Theatre, showcasing the ongoing relevance and appeal of his imaginative creations.

Premiere of New Works

Inoue's exhibition at Sendai Mitsukoshi will feature approximately 50 pieces, primarily focusing on original works and new prints. Among the highlights is a newly created print titled 'Shining Evening,' produced this year to commemorate his 77th birthday, which will be debuted exclusively in Sendai.

Other notable new prints include:
  • - 'A Night with Friends' (26x41 cm)
  • - 'Tanimachi' (55x66.4 cm)
  • - 'Mountain Garden' (50x72.7 cm)
  • - 'A Hill with a View' (28.5x45.5 cm)

Visitors to the exhibition will have a unique opportunity to meet Naohisa Inoue in person. He will be present at the gallery on July 18, 19, and 20 from 14:00 to 17:00, where he will sign prints and art books purchased at the event, providing fans with a memorable experience.
