Bank Stocks Face Crucial Week Amid Longest Losing Streak Since 2008

Bank Stocks Face a Crucial Test Week Amidst a Long Decline

The financial landscape is under scrutiny as the KBW Bank Index, which comprises 24 significant financial institutions, is poised to mark its sixth consecutive weekly decline. According to Bloomberg, this losing streak is the longest seen since the turmoil of the 2008 financial crisis. Currently, the index sits approximately 13% below its peak recorded in August, indicating it has entered a correction phase even after large U.S. banks reported their third-quarter earnings. This week, attention will shift towards regional lenders, credit card companies, and trust banks, with a series of earnings reports set to release nearly every day.

Market Analysis

Despite the third-quarter earnings from major banks, including banking giants, there has been little sign of recovery for bank stocks. Issues such as weak performance in fixed-income trading have overshadowed strengths in equity trading. Analysts are particularly concerned about the potential disruptive impact that AI technology may have on financial services, coupled with recent inflation data that suggests the Federal Reserve may alter its approach to interest rates. Barclays analyst Jason Goldberg pointed out that the bank index has lagged behind the broader S&P 500 index in 18 of the last 21 trading sessions, marking the worst performance period since the index was introduced in May of 1992.

Bloomberg Intelligence’s Herman Chan noted that elevated interest rates will likely slow growth prospects and increase loan defaults moving forward. Nevertheless, there were some bright spots, particularly in stock trading where leading lenders cumulative revenues surpassed $67 billion during the first three quarters of the year, outpacing their bond, currency, and commodities trading counterparts by about $5 billion.

Meanwhile, some banks like JPMorgan Chase managed to see their stocks increase by 2.02%, even as others like Citigroup and Bank of America struggled.

Weekly Outlook

The upcoming week presents a unique challenge for banks as various noteworthy companies prepare to report their quarterly results, shifting focus from large trading institutions to regional and credit-centric banks. This could potentially emphasize the significance of loans, consumer deposits, credit card transactions, and custody offerings in shaping future growth trajectories.

Monday - Fifth Third Bancorp

Fifth Third Bancorp is set to kick off the earnings week with a report scheduled for release at 6:30 AM ET on October 19. Analysts are eager to see results as this will be the company’s first quarterly statement since its systems merger with Comerica during the Labor Day weekend. Last quarter, Fifth Third's earnings reached $801 million, equating to adjusted earnings of $1.02 per share, with a notable improvement in its net interest margins. A modest decline of 0.53% in share price was noted just prior to the report.

Tuesday - Capital One Financial

Following Fifth Third, Capital One is set to announce its earnings at approximately 4:05 PM ET on October 20, with an earnings call at 5 PM. Capital One's second-quarter net income surged to $3 billion or $4.73 per share, amidst a backdrop of declining provisions for credit losses. The company has been positively received since integrating Discover, resulting in a 1.24% rise in shares before the upcoming report.

Wednesday - Northern Trust

On the morning of October 21, Northern Trust will report its third-quarter earnings, with market observers eager to see how it performs relative to its peers. Last quarter, Northern Trust reported significant growth in assets under management and strong diluted earnings per share.

Thursday - Huntington Bancshares

Huntington Bancshares will wrap up the week's regional bank earnings on October 22. The company’s rapid growth following its recent acquisition has set the stage for impressive results including a major increase in its net interest income and loan portfolio.

Friday - American Express

To conclude the week, American Express's earnings report is anticipated on October 23 at 7:00 AM ET. Expectations point to a healthy growth trajectory for the company, as prior reports have shown significant revenue growth and increased member spending.

The economic calendar this week features several important indicators, including housing starts, jobless claims, and consumer sentiment metrics, which could weigh heavily on market sentiment. Additionally, investors are awaiting the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate decision scheduled for October 28. This adds further complexity during a week where bank stocks are closely watched amid shifting consumer and economic dynamics that could reshape the financial landscape for the upcoming quarters.

In summary, as bank stocks navigate turbulent waters, this week's earnings call represents not just a review of past performance, but a critical glimpse into how well regional banks are positioned to thrive within this evolving financial landscape.
