Mignone Women’s Health Collaborative: A New Era in Women's Health
In an impressive initiative to revolutionize women's health care, NYU Langone Health has announced the establishment of the Mignone Women's Health Collaborative. This ambitious project is made possible by a generous donation of $60 million, which includes a landmark $50 million gift from the Allison and Roberto Mignone Family Foundation and an additional $10 million from Kenneth C. Griffin, founder and CEO of Citadel. The goal of this Collaborative is to enhance care for women at every life stage, addressing significant gaps in the field and ensuring focused, specialized treatment.
The Collaborative's Mission
The Mignone Women's Health Collaborative will bring together over 125 expert providers across 20 key areas of women’s health. This will range from preventive care and pregnancy support to addressing midlife health issues and fibroid care. The initiative emphasizes the need for integrated health services that are tailored to the unique experiences and challenges faced by women. As a result, the NYU Langone East 53rd Street Ambulatory Care Center will be renamed to reflect this commitment.
Allison Mignone, who has been instrumental in fostering this initiative, expressed her enthusiasm by emphasizing the importance of prioritizing issues in women's health. As a mother of four daughters and a breast cancer survivor, she believes that this Collaborative can transform women's health through improved research, education, and patient care. The existing framework of the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women's Health, launched in 2011, will be enhanced through this new Collaborative.
Investing in Women’s Future
The $60 million investment is a clear testament to the evolving understanding of women’s health care, which has historically been underfunded. The Collaborative intends to close the service gaps that women have faced for decades in medical treatment. Significant health issues that are prevalent among women, such as endometriosis and fibroid disease, will receive more comprehensive attention, ensuring that conditions are diagnosed and treated promptly and effectively.
New Centers of Excellence
One of the keystones of the Mignone Women's Health Collaborative is the establishment of the Griffin Healthspan and Vitality Center, funded through Kenneth Griffin's generous contribution. This center is designed to promote overall well-being and longevity in women by providing highly personalized interventions and innovative diagnostic services. Notable offerings will include:
- - Movement Science: Experts from various fields will guide women on how to maintain physical health and activity throughout the aging process.
- - Nutrition and Behavioral Coaching: Patients will have access to endocrinologists and dietitians to discuss optimal nutrition and metabolic health.
- - Mental Health Support: A dedicated team will offer therapy and support for issues such as stress, trauma, and burnout.
- - Community Education Space: This area will serve as a hub for wellness classes and events, further promoting health literacy among women.
Dr. Robert I. Grossman, CEO of NYU Langone Health, expressed confidence that the Collaborative will represent a significant advancement in the provision of care to women. He articulated that NYU Langone’s commitment to quality and the strength of this new Collaborative will enhance their ability to deliver specialized treatment throughout every phase of life.
Addressing Underlying Health Issues
The health statistics surrounding women are staggering. Nationally, 11% of women suffer from endometriosis, and 80% will experience fibroid disease at some point in their lives. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among women, with many experiencing delays in receiving life-saving care. The chronic underfunding of women-specific health needs has highlighted the urgent need for initiatives such as the Mignone Women's Health Collaborative.
This Collaborative will not only enhance clinical care but also focus on educational initiatives at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, developing courses that spotlight how medical care can be better tuned to meet women’s specific health issues.
A Collaborative Future
The launch of the Mignone Women’s Health Collaborative is a powerful commitment to ensuring that women receive the comprehensive, quality healthcare that they deserve. By assembling a network of experts within NYU Langone and leveraging resources effectively, the Collaborative is poised to make a lasting impact on the health of women in New York City and beyond.
With visionary support from the Mignone Family Foundation and Kenneth Griffin, the future looks brighter for thousands of women who will benefit from this groundbreaking initiative, shaping a new standard in women's health care.
