China's Ice and Snow Economy: A Thriving Industry Driving National Growth

China's Booming Ice and Snow Economy

China has been experiencing a remarkable growth in its ice and snow economy, with Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province, leading the charge. The city's appeal is not just from its stunning winter scenery but also from its rich offerings in tourism and winter sports.

During the eight-day Spring Festival holiday that started on January 28, 2025, Harbin showcased its winter charm with record-breaking attendance at its famed Harbin Ice-Snow World, a theme park celebrated for its intricate ice sculptures. Over 610,000 visitors flocked to the attraction, with more than 100,000 patrons on a single day, February 1, marking a milestone for the city.

The city's increasing visibility on the global stage is attributed, in part, to its upcoming role as the host of the 9th Asian Winter Games from February 7 to 14. The event promises to spotlight China's commitment to winter sports, following the success of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to attend the opening ceremony, underscoring the significance of this event.

A Fast Lane for the Ice and Snow Industry

President Xi has expressed a keen interest in advancing China's ice and snow economy, designating it as a pivotal area for national growth. This economic segment not only encompasses winter sports but also integrates cultural aspects, tourism, and equipment manufacturing. China’s growing commitment is evident, as participation in winter sports has surged, with over 57.35 million people engaging in activities such as skating, skiing, and ice hockey during the 2023-2024 snow season.

Recent statistics from the General Administration of Sport indicate a whopping 385 million winter leisure visits nationally, representing a staggering 38% increase from the previous year. Specifically, Harbin alone attracted 87 million visitors last season, generating around 124.8 billion yuan (approximately $17.4 billion) in tourism revenue—an incredible 500% growth compared to the previous year.
