Luka Dončić Launches Foundation Aiming to Revitalize Youth Sports Globally
Luka Dončić Foundation: Transforming Youth Sports
In a remarkable move, Luka Dončić, the celebrated guard for the Dallas Mavericks and captain of the Slovenian national team, has officially launched the Luka Dončić Foundation on December 21, 2024. This day coincides with the Global Basketball Day, marking a significant moment for youth sports around the world. The foundation aims to enhance youth sports experiences, ensuring they become joyful and enriching opportunities for children everywhere.
Having experienced the profound impact of youth sports in his own childhood, Dončić is committed to providing future generations with access to the transformative joys of sports. He firmly believes that participation in youth sports is crucial in developing life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, and self-discipline, which extend far beyond the court.
The foundation's initial undertaking includes the release of an extensive report titled Inside Youth Basketball, examining the state of youth basketball in the US and Europe, particularly the Balkans, where many elite players originate. This study highlighted both the strengths and challenges present in youth basketball systems, revealing that a staggering 70% of young athletes disengage from sports by age 13, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. In response to this alarming trend, the foundation will introduce the Total Hoops Approach, a framework aimed at making youth basketball more accessible, enjoyable, and focused on positive child development.
Dončić stated, _“Basketball has been the joy of my life since I was a child. When I’m on the court, seeing the joy it brings brings me happiness. I want to give young people worldwide the same chance to experience this joy. Sports should be a space where children can safely learn, grow, laugh, make mistakes, and ultimately have fun.”_
On the day of the foundation's launch, the Mavericks will host a game against the LA Clippers at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, where Dončić will invite 750 local children representing various organizations, including Boys and Girls Clubs and the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas. These young guests will be introduced to the foundation's mission, encouraging them to participate in its activities.
The foundation's work will be guided by the newly established Youth Sports Leadership Council, which includes renowned athletes and advocates dedicated to fostering positive change in youth sports worldwide. Notable members consist of basketball icons like Stephen Curry and Pau Gasol, along with coaches and other advocates who are committed to promoting holistic training approaches for young athletes. Together, their collective expertise will aid in initiating pilot programs focused on the Total Hoops Approach.
Dončić's ambitious vision will also entail partnerships with esteemed organizations such as FIBA, the NBA, and various educational and welfare initiatives. With personal contributions exceeding $2.5 million, Luka Dončić Foundation aims to create sustainable changes within the realm of youth sports, benefiting aspiring athletes globally.
The comprehensive report detailing the findings from the youth basketball study and the total hoops framework will be officially revealed on December 21, 2024, at lukadoncicfoundation.org. This initiative is set to inspire numerous young athletes, showing them that through sports, they can achieve personal growth and community engagement.
As we look forward to the foundation's future initiatives, it’s clear that Luka Dončić is not merely passing the ball; he is paving the way for the next generation of athletes, ensuring they have the tools, support, and opportunities needed to succeed both on and off the court. With his passion and dedication, Dončić is genuinely making a difference for youth sports around the world.
