John Paik Enhances Crowell & Moring's IP Practice in Technology and Life Sciences



In a significant addition to the field of intellectual property law, John Paik has joined Crowell & Moring as a partner in their Patents Group, specifically within the firm’s Intellectual Property Department based in Orange County, California. With over 20 years of experience in the domain, Paik brings invaluable expertise gained from previous roles in leading law firms and prominent technology companies.

Paik’s most recent position was at GRAIL, a cutting-edge biotechnology firm, where he served as the senior director and head of intellectual property. During his time there, he spearheaded the protection of GRAIL’s innovations in machine learning, software, and analytics related to groundbreaking cancer detection technologies. His responsibilities included formulating the global IP strategy and advising on the commercialization of these technologies as well as navigating complex legal challenges such as antitrust investigations and the company’s public offering.

Throughout his career, Paik has managed a diverse range of patent portfolios, encompassing fields such as computer hardware and software, surgical robotics, medical devices, and automation systems. He is well-versed in both offensive and defensive patent strategies, assessing competitive landscapes, and navigating various legal reviews including inter partes reviews. His track record includes successfully arguing before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board to secure critical patent allowances, significantly bolstering clients’ market advantage.

Paik holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University, a master’s degree in physiological science from UCLA, and a JD from Cornell Law School.
