Teamsters Achieve Major Victory in Nationwide Sanitation Strike
In a significant achievement for labor unions, the Teamsters have emerged victorious in their nationwide strike against Republic Services. On October 15, 2025, members of Local 728, based in Cumming, Georgia, voted to ratify a record-setting contract with the waste management giant following months of relentless work stoppages.
Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien emphasized the strength and solidarity exhibited by union members throughout the strike. He stated, "Republic's greed and arrogance were no match for Teamsters' strength and solidarity. The company attempted to prolong this strike and inflict misery on our members, but they stood firm and exhibited tremendous courage. Our members have made every waste worker across America stronger with this victory."
The strike, which launched in early July, began when over 500 Teamsters at various locations, including Boston, Ottawa, and Lacey, faced personnel cuts and working conditions they deemed unacceptable. These strikes quickly escalated into a national movement, disrupting services for more than 2,000 sanitation workers across California, Massachusetts, Ohio, Indiana, Arkansas, and the Pacific Northwest.
Adding to the tension was Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman, who criticized Republic Services’ leadership for wasting millions trying to undermine the strike effort. He remarked, "Despite Republic's moral failure, our members made this corporation regret every day of the strike. This victory is significant and shows that the Teamsters will fight and win against such greed."
As a direct result of their collective action and determination, many Republic Teamsters have received pay raises reaching as high as 46%. Additionally, workers secured improved benefits that include comprehensive health and welfare options - a lifesaver for many families grappling with rising living costs.
Victor Mineros, the Teamsters’ Director of the Solid Waste and Recycling Division, expressed enormous pride in the union’s resilience. He stated, "Our members took on one of the most notorious corporations in America and showed their strength. This victory reflects the hard work, passion, and unyielding spirit of the Teamsters."
Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents approximately 1.3 million workers across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This recent win highlights the ongoing fight for workers’ rights and fair labor standards within the waste management industry and beyond. For more information, visit

In summary, the outcome of this strike serves as an important reminder that labor unions can successfully push back against corporate interests, making strides towards better working conditions and compensation for their members. The spirit of camaraderie demonstrated by the Teamsters is an inspiring note for labor movements all over the nation, solidifying their role as advocates for the working class.
