Discover the Comfortable Appeal of Futo Fabrics from Four Regions

Exploring Futo Fabrics

Futo, a fabric brand developed by KINTO, has introduced a new collection of lifestyle items that incorporate the unique characteristics of four distinct Japanese regions: Shiga, Wakayama, Gifu, and Nagano. The collection includes a variety of seven products such as waffle cloths, cut and sewn shirts, and bags. Starting from April 24, 2026, these items will be available at the KINTO online shop, KINTO REC STORE Tokyo, and other specialty stores nationwide.

Background of Waffle Cloth Development

The journey towards creating the waffle cloth began with the discovery of Shiga's hemp-woven waffle fabric. The aim was to develop a piece that is not only ideal for everyday use but also maintains a functional balance. Throughout this process, KINTO collaborated with local factories to conduct numerous samples. Through this iterative development, they identified that while 100% hemp offers excellent moisture-wicking properties, it presents challenges for day-to-day use. Consequently, they opted for a blend of cotton for the warp and linen for the weft, leading to a unique woven fabric. By meticulously adjusting the thickness of the threads and continuing to sample, they succeeded in creating a fluffy yet incredibly lightweight texture that is perfect for quick drying and easy use in daily life.

Embracing Material Quality

Kinto's commitment to quality craftsmanship is evident in the development of these products. In order to celebrate the fabric’s natural texture, particular care was taken during each production step. Colors were left undyed to preserve their natural hues, while “kas染め” (a hand-dyeing technique), was employed with gray linen to achieve a deep infusion of color into the fibers. This method maintains the fabric’s inherent texture while ensuring the dye permeates profoundly.

Additionally, KINTO designed the fabric to showcase more linen on the front and organic cotton on the back, resulting in a tightly woven, luxurious finish. Throughout the production process, they also implemented clever cutting techniques to minimize leftover materials, which underscores their ongoing commitment to sustainable practices that respect local resources.

Designer’s Insight

The theme of this collection revolves around the concept of 'journeys in daily life.' While traveling to distant lands provides significant inspiration, it's the little moments—like admiring the trees in one’s garden or feeling the warmth of the sun during a walk—that bring joy to everyday life and highlight the beauty around us. By selecting materials that resonate with these fleeting moments, Futo aims to enhance everyday experiences. The collaboration with the local hemp weaving factory has also been pivotal, as sharing a common heritage fosters a unique connection that enriches this collection.
