Base 2 Space: Seattle's Iconic Climb Returns for Cancer Research Support

Climb for a Cause: 9th Annual Base 2 Space Returns to Support Cancer Research

Seattle is set to host the eagerly awaited annual charity event, Base 2 Space, on Sunday, September 28. Participants from across the city and beyond are invited to tackle Seattle’s iconic Space Needle, challenging themselves through its 832 open-air stairs. This memorable climb isn’t just about taking in breathtaking views; it’s fundamentally a fundraising initiative geared towards benefiting the Fred Hutch Cancer Center and the Space Needle Foundation. The registration for this extraordinary event is now open, making it an opportune time for fitness enthusiasts and community supporters alike to participate.

The Base 2 Space event is unique in that it allows climbers access to the normally restricted staircases of the Space Needle, providing a once-a-year chance to ascend the tower and enjoy sweeping vistas of Mount Rainier, Puget Sound, and the city skyline. So far, more than 10,000 climbers have scaled the tower, generating over $4.5 million for cancer research. Each step taken signifies a commitment towards advancing critical research at Fred Hutch.

Base 2 Space is an amazing community event that we look forward to every year,” stated Ron Sevart, President and CEO of the Space Needle. He emphasized the importance of supporting Fred Hutch, reiterating that their ongoing research could greatly enhance the treatment and understanding of cancer.

Among the participants is Madeleine Fontillas Ronk, a breast cancer survivor, who has shared her inspiring journey with the climb. Having conquered cancer, she uses her annual participation as a way to honor those who are still battling the illness. “I climb because others can’t,” she explains, showcasing the event's dual spirit of competition and compassion.

For those interested, there's an exciting opportunity to kick off their registration alongside the Seattle Seahawks, who are celebrating their 50th season. Participants who register for specific waves of the Seahawks climb will be rewarded with a special custom t-shirt as well as unique prizes on climb day.

Registration Details

To join this inspiring event, each climber will need to pay a registration fee and commit to a minimum fundraising goal. Early birds who register before June 1 can benefit from discounted rates — $76 for adults and $55 for youths aged 8 to 17. After June 1, the costs increase to $90 for adults while youth fees remain at $55. A fundraising commitment of at least $200 for adults and $100 for youths is required, though participants are encouraged to set even higher personal goals. All funds raised will go directly towards support for lifesaving cancer research initiatives in the community, and details on registration and fundraising strategies can be found on the official event website: www.Base2SpaceSeattle.com.

Kelly O’Brien, Vice President of Philanthropy at Fred Hutch, expressed gratitude for the community’s ongoing support, remarking on how impactful it is to see thousands ascend the stairs each year. This event not only promotes health and fitness but also cultivates a sense of unity in the fight against cancer.

Top fundraisers from 2025’s event may even be granted the unique opportunity to climb the Space Needle's spire, an honor reserved for those who excel in their fundraising efforts during the climb. It promises to be a transformative day for everyone involved.
