Lung Cancer Research Foundation Strengthens Leadership with New Appointments
Lung Cancer Research Foundation Strengthens Leadership
The Lung Cancer Research Foundation (LCRF) has made significant strides in its leadership by naming Jill Morningstar as the new Chair of its Board of Directors. Morningstar's experience on the board since 2024 and her passionate advocacy for lung cancer research make her an ideal candidate to lead the organization into its next chapter as it continues its mission to improve outcomes for lung cancer patients.
Jill Morningstar takes over the role from Colleen Conner Ziegler, who led the board since 2023. Ziegler will remain on the board to further the LCRF's objectives. This leadership transition comes at a crucial time when lung cancer research is making notable advancements due to increased funding and awareness. Morningstar, whose husband was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, embodies a personal connection to the cause, which has fueled her commitment to this mission.
In addition to Morningstar's appointment, LCRF is excited to welcome two new members to its Board of Directors: Aileen Murgatroyd and Jill Frizzley. Murgatroyd, who is the Chair and co-founder of Research ALKay+ve, dedicated her efforts to advancing research for ALK-positive lung cancer after experiencing the loss of her daughter to the disease. Her charity, established in memory of her daughter, has gained international respect and collaboration within the lung cancer research community.
Jill Frizzley brings her own experience as a lung cancer survivor and advocate, further enhancing the board’s foundation of support and knowledge. Diagnosed with stage I lung cancer in early 2025, Frizzley has been instrumental in raising awareness about the realities faced by lung cancer patients, including the importance of ongoing research for better detection and treatment.
Both Murgatroyd and Frizzley have shown unwavering commitment to lung cancer advocacy, and their contributions are expected to significantly strengthen LCRF's strategic direction and outreach efforts.
Morningstar's Vision for the Future
As Morningstar takes on the role of Chair, she acknowledges the profound impact that research has had on her family and thousands of others. "Research gave us hope for the future, and I am committed to funding the most promising science to lead us towards better outcomes. It is imperative that we continue to push for increased federal funding for lung cancer research so that advancements can be made for those affected by this disease," she stated.
Her leadership philosophy will focus on collaboration within the community and accountability for the funds allocated towards research projects. Morningstar aims to ensure that progress within the field does not stagnate and that hope continues to thrive among patients and their families.
Colleen Ziegler, the outgoing Chair, has expressed confidence in Morningstar's capabilities, stating, "Jill's dedication and leadership skills will guide us in our continued efforts to support groundbreaking research. I am proud of what we have accomplished together and am excited for the next chapter under her leadership."
Continuing the Fight Against Lung Cancer
LCRF has made strides by funding nearly $53 million in research over the years, and the addition of new leadership is expected to enhance these efforts further. Aubrey Rhodes, the Executive Director of LCRF, emphasized the board's commitment to fostering advancements in research and supporting those impacted by lung cancer.
As the organization looks to the future, the combined experience and dedication of Morningstar, Murgatroyd, and Frizzley will undoubtedly drive LCRF's mission forward. The partnership aims to build upon the successes of the past while relentlessly pursuing innovative research projects that can change the lives of lung cancer patients.
Through these new appointments, the Lung Cancer Research Foundation reaffirms its resolve to tackle the complexities surrounding lung cancer, ensuring that everyone affected has access to the most effective treatments and resources available. LCRF believes in a future where lung cancer becomes manageable and, eventually, curable, thanks in part to the voices and actions of dedicated advocates at the helm of its leadership.
