In examining the implications of improved NUE, the study revealed that corn growers leveraging Advanced Agrilytics' methodologies reported a median NUE of 0.75 lb N/bu, markedly above the industry average of 1.0 to 1.2 lb N/bu. The report highlights a substantial reduction in the carbon intensity score by 23.5%, lowering it to 21.2 g CO2e/MJ compared to the industry's baseline of 27.72. Additionally, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions were reduced by 20.6%, with the updated figure standing at 10.7 g CO2e/MJ (down from 13.47).

These reductions play a crucial role, as N2O is known to be a potent greenhouse gas with a warming potential 273 times greater than that of carbon dioxide. The findings illustrate an annual reduction of 272,262 metric tons of CO2e emissions alongside a decrease of 423,641 kilograms of N2O emissions (equivalent to 115,654 metric tons of CO2e). Such reductions are comparable to taking more than 63,000 gasoline-powered vehicles off the roads or offsetting the CO2 emissions from over 26 million gallons of diesel fuel, akin to the carbon removal achieved by cultivating more than 4.5 million tree seedlings over a decade.

The economic aspect is equally noteworthy, as the new analysis calculated that an average loss of NUE by 0.15 lb N/bu equates to a gross revenue decline of approximately $80.42 per acre. These losses stem from both the increased cost of nitrogen inputs and diminished yield performance, whether due to an over-application of nitrogen, mis-timing its application, or nitrogen loss in overly saturated areas. When this figure is extrapolated across the 750,000 acres analyzed, it presents a potential annual economic impact of around $60 million.

Moreover, enhancing NUE may also qualify growers for incentive payments stemming from various public and private conservation and sustainability initiatives.
