Unveiling the Board Game Shrine in Kyoto
In a unique blend of culture and innovation, MOTHER EARTH Inc. has launched the 'Bodoge Shrine' within the experiential select shop 'Some Usagi' located in Kyoto's Okazaki area. This project is designed to shed light on undiscovered board games, providing a community hub to implement serious games for social change. Inspired by Japan's 'offering' culture, the shrine welcomes creators to ‘dedicate’ their works, fostering a cycle where the desires for societal improvement (WILL) transform into actionable steps (ACT).
Objectives of the Bodoge Shrine
1.
Creating a Space for Undiscovered Works: The shrine will feature a broad spectrum of games, including board games, card games, analog games, TRPGs, simulations, and educational tools. Creators and groups are invited to dedicate their undiscovered works, which will be displayed both permanently and through rotating exhibitions, leading to new encounters and the reevaluation of creativity.
2.
Focus on Serious Games: The selection of games will prominently feature those addressing critical issues such as climate change, community coexistence, diversity, public goods, financial literacy, health, disaster prevention, and civic technology. The design of these games prioritizes facilitating understanding, dialogue, and ultimately, action.
3.
A Gathering Place for Change-Makers: The Bodoge Shrine aims to serve as a ‘third place’ for individuals looking to make a difference. Educators, NGOs, municipal representatives, corporations focusing on CSV/SDGs, researchers, designers, active citizens, and players will exchange ideas and collaborate in an open space. Each program will include facilitation and event management as core components.
Five-Step Utilization Process at the Bodoge Shrine
The process to engage with the Bodoge Shrine consists of five steps:
1. Idea Organization Support
Participants will start by articulating the 'seeds' of their game ideas, clarifying themes, experiential value, and target audiences with guidance from the Bodoge team.
2. Direction Consultation
From brainstorming sessions to progression planning, the team will support creators throughout the development process.
3. Game Development Assistance
This phase involves discussing game design, visual aesthetics, and rule structuring, working together to enhance both enjoyment and educational value.
4. Media Exposure Support
The team will facilitate outreach to magazines and related media, assisting in the creation of press materials and review requests to garner visibility.
5. Sales Support at Kyoto Store and Online
Beyond showcasing at the physical store in Kyoto, the Bodoge Shrine will also promote online sales and related events to drive recognition and sales.
