Key Updates from the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL)
On February 20, 2025, the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) revealed important changes coming to the Blue Water Bridge (BWB), set to take effect on April 1, 2025. These modifications will include a shift to cashless tolling, along with adjustments to toll rates, reflecting FBCL's continued dedication to modernizing operations and improving users' experience.
Transition to Cashless Tolling
The move towards cashless tolling comes as part of an effort to align with industry standards and accommodate the diminishing reliance on cash transactions. With this transition, travelers can expect expedited transaction times, leading to reduced wait times and a decrease in the environmental impact resulting from vehicle idling.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, BWB implemented a temporary cashless tolling system that proved both effective and beneficial, paving the way for this permanent shift.
FBCL has also broadened accepted payment methods, now including American Express (AMEX) and Discover credit cards for all toll transactions headed to the U.S. Coupled with existing debit and credit card options, plus the ConneXion pre-paid toll program, travelers will have multiple streamlined and secure payment choices available.
According to Karen Richards, FBCL's Chief Operating Officer, these changes mark a significant improvement in the BWB's operational efficiency. The cashless system aims to minimize processing times at toll booths, thereby enhancing the travel experience.
Adjusted Toll Rates
Alongside the transition to cashless payment, the toll rates at the Blue Water Bridge will see adjustments. These changes are critical to addressing ongoing maintenance and capital needs that ensure the infrastructure remains safe and efficient. FBCL conducts regular reviews of toll rates, with the next review scheduled for October 1, 2025.
From April 1, 2025, the new toll rates are as follows:
- - ConneXion Pre-paid Account (CAD)
- Cars: $4.50
- Extra Axles (Per Axle): $4.50
- Trucks (Per Axle): $5.00
- Cars: $7.00
- Extra Axles (Per Axle): $7.00
- Trucks (Per Axle): $7.00
Note: The commercial per axle charge applies to vehicles measuring 2.45m (8′) and taller. Importantly, rates for passenger vehicles under the ConneXion program will not increase, encouraging travelers to take advantage of this program for more efficient crossings and discounted toll fees.
ConneXion users also benefit from automated toll processing across all lanes, making their travel experience smoother. Furthermore, customers can link their ConneXion tags with the Edge Pass system managed by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
