SANY's First Hydrogen Refueling Project in Australia
In a groundbreaking move for both SANY and the Australian energy sector, the company successfully delivered its inaugural hydrogen refueling project in May 2025. This initiative marks a pivotal step in broadening SANY’s commitment to green energy solutions on a global scale. The journey began in April 2024 when SANY forged a strategic partnership with an Australian client, launching its technology into the international market for the first time following the construction of China's largest hydrogen production and refueling station.
The central feature of this remarkable project is a tailor-made hydrogen production and refueling system designed to operate at a significant capacity of 200 Nm³/h. This advancement not only demonstrates SANY’s technological prowess but also its ambitious plans for international expansion in the renewable energy sector.
Innovative Technology at the Core
The hydrogen refueling project leverages industry-leading technology that utilizes flexible electrolysis to produce hydrogen efficiently. Complementing this system is an integrated control mechanism that assures stable operations. Notably, the hydrogen storage operates at pressures of 50 MPa and 90 MPa, allowing the facility to cater to both commercial vehicles requiring refueling at 35 MPa and passenger vehicles demanding refueling at 70 MPa. This versatility ensures that vehicles engaged in freight and personal transport can refuel quickly and safely at the integrated station.
Adherence to Global Standards
To ensure a seamless entry into the Australian market, stringent production standards were adhered to throughout the project. The system has received full certification from Bureau Veritas (BV) and TÜV SÜD, complying with the highest electrical safety certification standards as dictated by Australia’s robust AS 3000 regulations. Additionally, all pressure vessels are double certified under ASME/AS1200, confirming that they meet both American and Australian regulatory requirements, with an impressive lifespan of over 20,000 fatigue cycles. It is also noteworthy that the hydrogen refueling protocol conforms to the international SAE J2601 standards, permitting passenger vehicles to be refueled to 70 MPa in just three minutes.
Safety and Design Innovation
SANY’s commitment to safety is evident in its advanced development processes which rely heavily on rigorous design fundamentals. During the project’s progression, the team conducted extensive risk assessments and controls of both the PEM hydrogen production and purification system, as well as the high-pressure hydrogen refueling system. The analyses included identifying potential hazards, conducting hazard and operability studies, and ensuring the security integrity levels were adequately managed.
These thorough analytical approaches enable early risk identification and pave the way for developing safe and resilient hydrogen solutions. SANY’s integration of cutting-edge technology with strict safety standards has facilitated the successful launch of this hydrogen project in Australia, symbolizing a significant step toward sustainable development in the energy sector.
A Commitment to Clean Energy
SANY continues to prioritize clean energy advancements, focusing on wind, solar, hydrogen, energy storage, and microgrid technologies. As President Xiang Wenbo remarked, “SANY is accelerating its transition towards decarbonization and green growth, injecting a sustainable momentum into the industry.” This ambitious project in Australia not only reinforces SANY's stature in the market but also embodies their commitment to environmentally responsible energy solutions. The future looks bright for SANY as it leads the way into a sustainable energy landscape, one hydrogen refueling project at a time.
