Enjoy a Refreshing Break at Shinagawa Central Garden's New Initiatives

A Refreshing Urban Oasis: Shinagawa FOR REST 2025

From May 12 to 31, 2025, the Shinagawa Central Garden will transform into a serene urban oasis as it hosts the concept known as 'Shinagawa FOR REST 2025.' Organized by Nittetsu Kowa Real Estate Co., Ltd., this initiative aims to redefine urban green space, focusing on providing relaxing moments for professionals and visitors alike.

The Shinagawa Central Garden, which spans approximately 2 hectares (around 5 acres) between the Shinagawa Intercity and Shinagawa Grand Commons, features lush greenery with over 290 trees, complimented by shrubs and ground covers. These factors contribute to its status as one of Tokyo's rare green spaces close to major transport hubs.

The groundwork for this event was laid by the previous year's endeavor, 'Shinagawa FOR REST 2024.' During this period, the incorporation of standing counters, reclining chairs, and various other amenities encouraged visitors to utilize the garden more actively, engaging in activities ranging from food truck offerings to flea markets and van life experiences. Collaborative research with Obayashi Corporation analyzed the changes in usage patterns before and after the initiative, showcasing a significant uptick in visitor engagement and satisfaction.

A Focus on Rest and Relaxation

The upcoming 'Shinagawa FOR REST 2025' builds upon these insights with a clear focus on relaxation and communal engagement, framed under the tagline, 'A moment to unwind in the urban oasis.' The initiative intends to enhance the existing amenities within the garden while also expanding its offerings through new features.

A notable aspect of Shinagawa FOR REST 2025 includes the division of the Shinagawa Central Garden and the adjoining outdoor plaza into distinct zones. The Relax Zone will see an increase in reclining chairs and new 'Totonoi' (waiting chairs), promoting a peaceful environment conducive to passive rest. Additionally, a designated Solo Office Zone will be introduced, equipped with work desks for solitary activities like reading or taking care of work tasks, enabling users to enjoy their personal time in a calm setting.

Moreover, the Popup Zone will coincide with the health management event 'KARADA Re-BOOT WEEK 2025,' which will feature a basketball court set up from May 12 to 16. This zone will provide opportunities for quick lunchtime activities, such as basketball free-throw challenges and strength training, as well as wellness sessions like yoga—promoting active rest among visitors.

Enhancing Community Connections

The previous year's findings highlighted a striking transformation in how people use the garden. During the four-week experiment, the number of activities increased by 3.7 times and the type of activities shifted significantly from digital engagement to face-to-face conversations. The data indicates that creating inviting public spaces can positively influence social interactions and the overall satisfaction of visitors.

With Shinagawa FOR REST 2025, Nittetsu Kowa Real Estate aims to evolve the garden into a more accessible urban green space for office workers, residents, students, and visitors. The initiative aspires not only to promote relaxation but also to foster a deeper sense of community among diverse users of the space.

Exploring Pet Life in the City

In addition to the primary financial and wellness programs, the garden will also host SHINAGAWA URBAN PET LIFE on May 17 and 18, 2025. This event caters to the increasing number of pet owners in urban settings, offering a venue for interaction between pets and their owners, allowing participants to discover the joys of including pets in city living. Activities will consist of a pet market, adoption discussions, dog dance performances, and educational talks, providing a multifaceted experience focused on connection and community well-being.
