Organizations Face Alarming Rates of Unauthorized Data Access in 2026 Report
Alarming Levels of Unauthorized Data Access in Mid-Sized Organizations
According to the latest findings from Netwrix's 2026 Data and Identity Security Report, nearly 40% of mid-sized organizations reported instances of unauthorized access to sensitive data over the preceding year. This percentage is significantly higher than that of both smaller organizations with under 500 employees, which reported 18%, and larger organizations with 10,000 or more employees, which reported 27%.
The report highlights a growing concern among mid-sized organizations, particularly those employing between 500 to 999 individuals, who faced the most significant security challenges. Grady Summers, CEO of Netwrix, noted that these companies find themselves in a challenging phase of growth. “They’re large enough that managing access becomes increasingly complicated, yet often lack the necessary resources and tools typical of larger enterprises,” he stated. This difficulty in managing data access can lead to increased vulnerabilities and exposure to data breaches.
An overwhelming 80% of surveyed organizations admitted that they cannot obtain a consolidated view of where sensitive data exists and who has access to it. The findings paint a dire picture, especially for mid-sized organizations that frequently lack the sophisticated security infrastructure of larger counterparts. A staggering 76% of the participants revealed that their identity and data security strategies remain disjointed and uncoordinated, undermining their overall security posture.
Concerns about deteriorating security are compounded by the increased adoption of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation, which has led to a substantial rise in the number of identities with the capability to access sensitive data. For instance, 67% of respondents noted that the incorporation of AI has led to a notable increase in identities that can access sensitive information.
Furthermore, budget constraints appear to be a significant barrier to enhancing identity and data security for organizations with fewer than 1,000 employees, with 34% citing this as a primary concern. Others point to skill shortages and staffing issues, which many fear hinder their efforts to implement robust security measures.
The report further highlights the financial repercussions of unauthorized access, with 56% of affected organizations estimating losses exceeding $100,000. The potential for operational disruptions and damage to customer trust can yield long-lasting consequences, with 47% of organizations citing these as significant repercussions of data breaches.
In a stark contrast, among companies with fewer than 500 employees, only 23% had conducted an Active Directory security assessment in the last year, compared to an astonishing 8% of those with 10,000 employees or more. Alarmingly, 18% of smaller firms admitted that non-human identities, such as bots or automated accounts, are not governed at all, leaving them particularly vulnerable to unauthorized access.
In light of these findings, Netwrix has introduced its 1Secure™ platform, designed specifically for organizations that have outgrown basic security solutions without the capability for a full-fledged Security Operations Center. This innovative platform aims to provide a comprehensive risk assessment within an hour, boasting over 200 security checks powered by PingCastle and several automation features designed to simplify the work of IT teams.
To further address these pressing security challenges, Netwrix will host an event known as Netwrix Innovation Week from October 19 to 23, 2026. This gathering will feature practitioner sessions, live demos, and expert discussions focusing on securing sensitive data and identities amid the evolving landscape of AI technology.
As the security landscape continues to transform, organizations must prioritize understanding where their sensitive data resides and ensure robust governance of who accesses it. The report serves as a critical reminder that enhancing data security is not just about technology but also about adopting a holistic approach to identity and data governance, especially for mid-sized businesses that find themselves increasingly at risk in today’s digital environment.
