At the forefront of this initiative is the University of Applied Sciences (UAS) in Sankt Pölten, which is actively developing tools aimed at enhancing both transparency and sustainability within AI systems.

Understanding the CERTAIN Project



The UAS's latest venture, named CERTAIN (Certification for Ethical and Regulatory Transparency in Artificial Intelligence), aims to establish robust measures to ensure ethical practices and compliance with European Union regulations related to AI development. The project's main objective is to craft viable solutions that allow organizations to adhere to these regulations concerning responsible data use and AI practices, all while being quick and cost-effective.

Sebastian Neumaier, the project's lead and a senior researcher at the Institute for Computer Security Research, emphasizes that the CERTAIN initiative is designed to develop tools that will make AI systems more transparent and verifiable. This aligns with the European AI Act's requirements — a legislative framework that aims to enhance trust among users towards AI technologies.

Fostering Transparency and Innovation



One of the critical goals of the CERTAIN project is to create comprehensive guidelines and digital tools that comply with existing European legal frameworks concerning AI. By doing so, it aspires to present intuitive solutions for both public sector entities and private enterprises, enabling them to navigate the complex legal landscape of AI, recognize the benefits of innovative technologies, and implement these advancements to their advantage.

Moreover, the project intends to forge common standards that enhance collaboration in data processing and AI development, ultimately supporting sustainable growth. By promoting data interoperability standards and adhering to existing regulations, CERTAIN contributes to establishing open and reliable European data spaces.

About the CERTAIN Project



The CERTAIN project is implemented under the oversight of Idemia Identity and Security France, in collaboration with the St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences and 19 partners from ten European countries. This initiative brings together a diverse consortium encompassing leading industrial companies, academic institutions, and research organizations.

The consortium's preliminary meeting took place in January 2025 in Osny, France. The CERTAIN project is part of the European Horizon Europe - Cluster 4, which focuses on digital, industry, and space innovations.
