Celebrated Author Dai Oishi Launches New Serial Novel in Kahoku Shimbun

New Adventure Awaits: Dai Oishi's Latest Work

On November 23, 2025, renowned author Dai Oishi kicked off his new serial novel titled "The Unluckiest Boy in Japan" in the Sunday morning edition of the Kahoku Shimbun, available in the section dedicated to Tohoku literature.

Oishi, originally from Noshiro City in Akita Prefecture, has made a name for himself in the literary world, famously winning the 22nd Boiled Eggs Newcomer Award in 2019 for his work "Ask Shagaku!" This award-fueled success saw him author various celebrated novels set in the picturesque regions of Tohoku, showcasing the rich cultural tapestry of his homeland.

Presently, Oishi is also crafting a serialized essay for Akita Sakigake Shimbun, but this marks a significant milestone as it is his first attempt at writing a novel for a newspaper. "I aim to create an exceptionally entertaining and slightly melancholic story suited for weekend morning reading," he expressed passionately.

The Story Unfolds

"The Unluckiest Boy in Japan" transports readers back to the early Heisei era, particularly to a seaside town known as Shiobama in Miyagi Prefecture. The narrative follows Masaki, a fourth-grader who becomes friends with the new transfer student Daijiro, who, despite his short temper, is deeply lonely. As they bond over shared experiences, their friendship deepens.

One day after school, the duo visits a local shrine hovering above the port town. However, their ill-fated antics lead to unforeseen consequences: Daijiro draws a "curse" on his New Year's fortune, while Masaki, who accompanies him to the shrine, unexpectedly draws "great fortune," soon finding himself the lucky recipient of raffle prizes. Is this merely a coincidence, or is it destined?

As their story progresses, they are joined by two other friends, the athletic and cheerful Shunta and the diligent and meticulous Shigenobu. The narrative promises to chronicle their friendship across three decades, embarking on a journey filled with laughter, challenges, and heartwarming moments.

Illustrations That Breathe Life

Enhancing the narrative are illustrations by the talented artist Momo Kamei, who brings to life the various colorful characters of Oishi’s narrative with her vibrant strokes. Kamei, hailing from Ōsaki City in Miyagi Prefecture, is recognized for her illustrations and logos, gracing commercial establishments throughout Sendai and Tokyo.

She had previously collaborated with Oishi on his notable work "The Death God’s Altar" (Futabasha), and she's ecstatic to infuse her artistic vision into "The Unluckiest Boy in Japan." "Oishi's work resonates with a nostalgic familiarity for me, invoking feelings of both mystery and reality that entice my imagination. I'm excited to walk alongside the protagonists as the story unfolds," Kamei shared about her involvement.
