AARCH Society Launches New Fund to Establish Heritage Center in Frederick

The African American Resources Cultural and Heritage Society, Inc. (AARCH) has announced the creation of The AARCH Society-African American Heritage Center Fund, aiming to support the establishment of an African American Heritage Center at 125 East All Saints Street in downtown Frederick, Maryland. This initiative marks an important step towards enhancing cultural education and preservation within the community.

The new heritage center will not only be a venue for showcasing historical exhibits but will also serve as a hub for educational programs and resources that highlight the contributions and experiences of African Americans in the region. This center is set to become a vital cultural institution, ensuring that the rich history and various artifacts are preserved for future generations.

Dr. Olivia White, the Board President of AARCH Society, expressed her excitement for the project, stating, "The entire Frederick community, as well as visitors to our city, will have the opportunity to learn about the history, culture, heritage, and contributions of the African American community." This fund is seen as a powerful opportunity to celebrate and share the extensive history of African Americans in Frederick County.

Recently, construction officially commenced on the 3,200-square-foot facility that will house not just permanent exhibits but also feature traveling exhibitions, a multi-purpose theater, meeting spaces, and state-of-the-art research and archival facilities. One of the center's highlights includes interactive programs designed for young learners, as well as "Living Treasures" oral histories and recognition of prominent Black families from Frederick and their lasting impacts on the region.

Scheduled for completion in the fall, this center is expected to play a transformative role in the cultural landscape of Frederick and provide an inclusive platform for education. It represents an important stride toward acknowledging and preserving the invaluable contributions of African Americans, which can too often be overlooked.

Since 1986, The Community Foundation of Frederick County has played an instrumental role in supporting local initiatives, infusing over $102 million into the local community. Their commitment to fostering educational and cultural projects underscores their dedication to building a stronger Frederick.
