Comcast Empowers Veterans with New Digital Resources and Lift Zones for Better Connectivity

Comcast Empowers Veterans with New Digital Resources

On May 19, 2025, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Comcast celebrated a significant milestone by launching a dedicated Lift Zone in collaboration with the Liberty Place Housing Complex. This initiative not only aims to foster digital literacy among its residents but also addresses the urgent need for technological access within the military veteran community.

The Launch Event

The opening ceremony was graced by notable figures including Knoxville’s Mayor Indya Kincannon and Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs. They were joined by Comcast's Vice President of Government Affairs, Melinda Little, and Marisa Moazen, Chief Strategy Officer of Knoxville's Community Development Corporation. Together, they cut the ribbon to officially inaugurate the new Lift Zone.

The event was particularly significant, as it coincided with the distribution of 35 laptops to residents of Liberty Place. Mayor Kincannon highlighted the importance of this gesture, stating, _"The residents of Liberty Place have made countless sacrifices in service to our country. This act of generosity by Comcast helps to remind them that we are grateful, recognize their sacrifice, and are committed to their growth."_

The Role of Comcast's VetNet

A crucial element of this program is Comcast's veteran-focused employee resource group, known as VetNet. This group comprises Comcast employees who are veterans, active military members, military family members, and supporters of the military community. During the event, VetNet members distributed personalized letters of appreciation to each resident, adding a heartfelt touch to the celebration.

Since its inception, Comcast has been dedicated to supporting the veteran community. The company has hired over 21,000 veterans, National Guard members, reserve service members, and military spouses since 2015. Furthermore, the Veteran Network currently boasts over 9,000 members, showcasing its commitment to fostering a supportive work environment.

For the third consecutive year, Comcast was ranked among the top three employers in the Military Times' _"Best for Vets"_ rankings for 2024, underscoring its ongoing efforts to create opportunities for veterans.

Impact on Veterans' Lives

The Lift Zone at Liberty Place is pivotal in providing free high-speed internet access, which is essential in today's digital age. According to Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs, _"Providing internet access and laptops to our veterans is a major step in showing them the importance of technology and the impact these tools have on our lives."_

The Lift Zone is particularly designed for veterans who have experienced homelessness or are at risk, with the housing complex offering 32 fully furnished units to support their reintegration into society. Melinda Little remarked, _"Creating Lift Zones and providing resources that encourage digital access are a major part of Comcast's commitment to the communities we serve."_

A Broader Commitment to Digital Opportunity

Comcast’s commitment to digital equity extends beyond just this initiative. The company has been serving the Knoxville community for nearly 30 years through Project UP, a monumental 10-year, $1 billion investment aimed at enhancing digital opportunities. Since the launch of its Internet Essentials program in 2011, over 680,000 residents in Knoxville have benefited from affordable home internet access.

Additionally, Comcast has established several WiFi-connected Lift Zones at local community centers across the area, providing safe environments for families and students to learn, complete assignments, acquire digital skills, and explore job opportunities.
