Over 100 Pepsi-Cola Drivers in Georgia Unite with Teamsters for Fair Representation

In a decisive call for change, more than 100 drivers from Pepsi-Cola's facilities in Atlanta and Lithonia, Georgia, have voted to join the ranks of Teamsters Local 528. This overwhelming support marks a pivotal moment in their quest for better working conditions, fair wages, and a collective voice in their workplace.

The drivers rallied together after experiencing feelings of mistreatment at the hands of their employer. Their campaign focused on achieving a unified voice, respect on the job, and improvements to their pay and benefits. The successful vote reflects a critical step towards securing a stronger future for these workers and their families.

Jeff Padellaro, Director of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference, congratulated the drivers, acknowledging the importance of their victory. “These workers understand that the best way to secure a better future is through a strong Teamsters contract,” he said. The solidarity displayed throughout the organization campaign is evident, especially considering the challenges faced, including an aggressive union-busting effort from Pepsi-Cola.

In an attempt to thwart the workers' organizing efforts, the company brought in 15 human resources representatives, resorting to tactics aimed at intimidating the employees. However, the strength of the community and the support received from local officials, including members of the Atlanta City Council, provided a lifeline to the drivers during this period of resistance.

Kip Cortez, the Local 528 Business Agent, highlighted the persistence of the drivers, stating, “These drivers remained united throughout the entire campaign and won, despite their employer's union-busting efforts.” The drivers recall a workplace plagued by favoritism and underpayment, which fueled their determination to demand change.

Kamian Vaughn, a 13-year veteran driver with Pepsi-Cola and now a proud Teamster, shared his sentiments: “We joined the Teamsters because we were mistreated, underpaid, and needed to get rid of favoritism in the workplace. We are ready to now fight for a fair first contract.” This sentiment resonates deeply with the commitment of Local 528, which represents thousands of hardworking men and women throughout Georgia.

This victory comes on the heels of another successful contract campaign for Local 528, which previously secured better terms for Keurig Dr. Pepper merchandisers. The ongoing efforts by the Teamsters reflect a broader movement within the labor community, emphasizing the importance of unionization as a means for workers to achieve fair labor standards and rights.

As the drivers gear up for negotiations for their first contract, optimism pervades their workplace. The support from the local community and the resolve of the drivers signal a vital step towards realizing their rights and aspirations.
