Shanghai's Upcoming International AI Conference

The 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) is gearing up to take place in Shanghai from July 17 to 20, 2026. This significant event, aimed at fostering collaboration and governance in the AI realm, promises to draw industry leaders and innovators from around the globe.

A Platform for Global Dialogue

Under the theme "AI Partnership for a Brighter Future," WAIC 2026 seeks to underscore the potential of AI as a powerful collaborative force. The conference will focus on addressing shared challenges and opportunities facilitated by international cooperation, exceptional research, and active public engagement. This year's event is organized by a coalition of key national entities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as well as various Chinese governmental bodies.

Zhou Haibing, the deputy head of the National Development and Reform Commission, noted that this conference is a platform for strengthening international ties regarding AI, asserting that AI governance is pivotal for humanity's future. China's commitment to a multilateral, open, and inclusive approach to AI development will be a cornerstone of this initiative.

Unprecedented Participation and Exhibitions

WAIC 2026 is positioned to make history with its unprecedented scale, anticipating over 1,400 prominent guests, including leading figures from the industry, high-ranking executives, and venture capitalists. Twelve national ministries, eight leading national laboratories, more than ten international organizations, along with multiple renowned research institutes and world-class universities will actively participate. This assembly is set to be one of the largest congregations of AI expertise ever witnessed at the conference.

Moreover, the accompanying exhibition will span an impressive 100,000 square meters across three significant locations in Shanghai. At the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center, companies will showcase a spectrum of AI applications, while futuristic explorations will occur in the West Bund area and a focus on smart infrastructure will take place in Zhangjiang.

Over 1,100 companies are expected to present more than 3,000 advanced exhibits, signifying the expansion of AI innovation across various sectors. This includes over 300 new AI solutions that will make their global debut during the conference. Specific categories, particularly intelligent computing and embodied AI, will feature contributions from upwards of 200 companies each, showcasing vibrant areas of entrepreneurship.

Amongst the exhibitors, 180 startups will represent up-and-coming dynamics in AI, having been selected through a rigorous process from over 1,200 applicants.

Academic Innovations and Awards

A remarkable addition to this year's conference is the launch of WAIC Academic, a platform for high-level academic discourse in AI. This forum is anticipated to attract esteemed scholars, including Turing Award winners, from around the world. With 332 paper submissions already received, the event promises to provide a comprehensive look at the forefront of AI scholarship. Collaborations will also take place between leading international universities and elite Chinese institutions, reflecting a global engagement in AI advancement.

In a bid to encourage youth and innovation, enhancements to the awards system will include the SAIL Award, recognizing Super AI Leaders and a Young Outstanding Paper Award for young scholars. Additionally, initiatives like an OPC challenge and competitions aimed at youth will further stimulate individual creativity and innovation.

Engaging the Community

In tandem with industry-focused discussions, the WAIC 2026 will involve the public through the WAIC City Walk program, where residents can explore AI applications within their everyday environments. With six thematic routes, the program will connect over 30 unique AI landmarks across 16 districts of Shanghai, effectively turning the city into an interactive exhibition space.

As WAIC 2026 aspires to present AI's dynamic and multi-faceted evolution, it integrates themes of global governance, academic brilliance, industrial synergy, and direct public engagement. This bold vision sets the stage for the next significant phase of AI development, underlining the importance of collaboration and shared growth in an increasingly interconnected world.
