Unveiling the Skin Transparency Score
Daiichi Sankyo Healthcare, based in Tokyo, has developed a unique metric known as the "Transparency Score" to assess the clarity of skin. Recent findings indicate that the transparency of skin is significantly influenced by its texture. This groundbreaking approach allows for a more scientific evaluation of skin health, moving beyond subjective impressions to a more objective measurement.
To achieve this, the Transparency Score utilizes key indicators derived from skin images, focusing primarily on "brightness" and the variability of yellowness (referred to as b* value). Brightness is correlated with a clear and even skin tone, characterizing what is defined as "transparent skin." In essence, the clearer skin is measured in terms of brightness and minimal color variability, contributing to its overall perceived transparency.
To explore the link between brightness, color variability, and overall skin conditions, the company conducted extensive research employing this newly developed Transparency Score. The results highlighted a particularly strong connection between skin texture and transparency. Thus, improving skin texture and reducing color irregularities may lead to significant advancements in skincare product development aimed at enhancing visual transparency.
Details of the Transparency Score
The company recently released findings indicating the efficacy of their objective evaluation method for measuring skin transparency. A study conducted with 66 women aged 20 to 50 involved imaging their skin and calculating the Transparency Score based on brightness and yellowness variability. Additional assessments included various metrics and techniques to evaluate skin states thoroughly.
Subsequently, the study investigated correlations between the calculated Transparency Score, which includes the parameters of brightness and color variability, and information extracted from a 3D skin analyzer. This analyzer provided insights into pore count, skin roughness, and the volume of skin surface irregularities, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of skin conditions.
The analysis confirmed a significant negative correlation between the Transparency Score and skin texture evaluation metrics. Specifically, a higher presence of poor skin texture corresponded with a lower Transparency Score, underscoring the connection between skin clarity and texture state.
Further Research Findings
Given the established correlation between the Transparency Score and skin texture evaluations, researchers explored the individual effects of brightness and yellowness variability on these assessments. Results showed a consistent significant correlation across all derived metrics, with particular emphasis on the strong positive correlation between skin color variability and texture evaluation metrics. This suggests that uneven skin tone is a crucial factor influencing overall skin transparency.
Future Perspectives
While the link between skin clarity and texture is commonly acknowledged, this study applied a more scientific lens to establish and substantiate this relationship. By analysing factors explicitly impacting skin texture and correlating them with the Transparency Score's components, the research suggests that nurturing smooth and well-hydrated skin plays an essential role in achieving the desired transparency.
As a forward-thinking entity, Daiichi Sankyo aims to leverage these findings in their skincare product innovations while delving deeper into cellular mechanisms that can enhance skin health — improving quality of life (QOL) in the process.
