The Return of the Doctoral Lounge Community
After five years of planning and development, the Doctoral Lounge, a community designed for those who have earned a PhD, is set to relaunch. The company behind this initiative, amulapo, based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, led by CEO Katsumi Tanaka, aims to create a vibrant space for doctoral graduates to connect, share knowledge, and advance their careers. The community will kick off with member reservations now open, offering a platform for engagements across various fields of expertise.
The Doctoral Lounge is not just a space for those in traditional fields of science and engineering; it also welcomes PhDs from humanities, social sciences, medical sciences, health, agriculture, education, and the arts. This inclusive approach is designed to foster collaboration and break down barriers that exist between different academic disciplines. Activities planned by the community include networking events, study sessions, and career consultations, all aimed at enhancing connections among PhD holders.
Furthermore, the Doctoral Lounge is committed to addressing the issues faced by PhD holders in Japan, such as their minority status and associated concerns regarding environment and treatment. The community aims to create a more supportive infrastructure that allows researchers to thrive. Initially focused on solving societal challenges, the platform plans to expand its reach over time, including individuals beyond PhD holders.
The Doctoral Lounge originally launched as a pilot project in spring 2021 but paused operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with an improved structure and plans for offline events, it is poised for a significant restart.

The Vision Behind the Doctoral Lounge
With the increasing need for interdisciplinary collaboration in Japan's scientific landscape, the Doctoral Lounge emerges as a crucial player. To stimulate innovation in the field of science and technology, it is essential to promote diversity and cooperation among researchers beyond traditional boundaries. Cases worldwide have shown that integrating perspectives from various fields can lead to groundbreaking advancements.
The launch of the Doctoral Lounge is also a response to the concerning trend of decreasing PhD holders within Japan as many aspiring researchers face bleak employment prospects. As a result, Japan risks losing valuable expertise as talented individuals seek careers abroad, further weakening domestic innovation.
By establishing an environment that values and supports doctoral researchers, the Doctoral Lounge aspires to reverse this trend and inspire a new generation of minds that will drive Japan's scientific advancements into the future. The community plans to offer exclusive services and privileges for doctoral members, such as designated venues for networking and gathering, to enhance their favorable conditions. Through collaboration with corporate partners, it aims to create a mutually beneficial ecosystem that supports doctoral graduates in their future endeavors.
