Onigiri Konga Grand Opening at Nihonbashi Takashimaya

On September 1, 2023, Onigiri Konga, managed by FBI Holdings, celebrated the grand opening of its twelfth store at the new annex of Nihonbashi Takashimaya S.C., located at 2-5-1 Nihonbashi, Chuo Ward, Tokyo.

The founder and representative of Onigiri Konga, Masanobu Goda, honed his skills at a renowned rice ball specialty shop for a year before launching his own venture. The training site was famous for having queues lasting up to three hours, earning significant attention across various media platforms and social networks.

Since the establishment of its first shop in Kamata, Onigiri Konga has rapidly expanded, recently opening stores at locations such as the Red坂 Biz Tower, Haneda Airport's Terminal 2 and 3, Shiodome City Center in July, and Otemachi One in August. In total, the brand has launched five new outlets within a five-month period this year, a clear testament to its growing popularity.

The Nihonbashi Takashimaya location offers 28 regular menu options alongside a limited-time Autumn product called “Chicken and Crispy Lotus Root.” This seasonal offering, set to launch on September 1, is a collaboration with Tetsu, a vegetable influencer with over 750,000 followers on X (formerly known as Twitter). This innovative rice ball encapsulates the crispy texture of lotus root combined with juicy chicken, providing a refreshing taste that is sure to delight customers.

Goda's Vision for Onigiri

Goda shared his passion for rice balls, stating, "In Japan, onigiri appears in various scenarios, bringing smiles and positive memories. From school trips to sports events and club activities, the associations are overwhelmingly cheerful. This cherished food culture has been cultivated in Japan for over two thousand years."

He emphasized the remarkable potential of onigiri, adding, "Seeing the happy faces of our customers reaffirms my decision to start this business. I believe that freshly made onigiri carries heartfelt emotions."

According to Goda, onigiri should be considered “smile food” rather than mere fast food. His goal is to spread this smile food across Japan and the world. “I envision a time when everyone associates onigiri with Konga. This is our mission,” he explains, suggesting that Onigiri Konga aims to initiate a new cultural movement starring onigiri that will last into the distant future.
