Carl Wilkens to Deliver Keynote Speech at UB's Commencement 2026

The University of Bridgeport has announced that humanitarian, author, and speaker Carl Wilkens will serve as the keynote speaker for its 2026 Commencement ceremonies. This significant event is set to take place on May 2, 2026, at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In addition, Wilkens will be honored with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of his exceptional contributions to humanitarian causes.

A Legacy of Courage

Carl Wilkens is famously noted for his valiant efforts during the tragic genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda in 1994. He distinguished himself as the only American who opted to remain in Kigali throughout this period of crisis. Rather than abandoning the city, he dedicated himself to aiding vulnerable children and families amidst rampant violence. His daily routines included navigating roadblocks and armed checkpoints, all in the service of delivering essential goods such as food, water, and medical supplies to orphaned groups who found themselves stranded. By collaborating closely with local Rwandan staff, Wilkens contributed to saving countless lives during those harrowing days.

In the years following the genocide, Wilkens has shared his transformative experiences with diverse audiences, ranging from college students and high school learners to esteemed institutions like the United Nations and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. His narratives highlight themes of profound loss and resilience, sparking essential conversations about cohabitation and understanding across cultures. His bestselling book, "I'm Not Leaving," published in 2011, and its accompanying documentary delve into his steadfast commitment to humanitarian principles. Wilkens has also been featured in the prestigious New York Times and on PBS Frontline for his influential work. His outstanding bravery has earned him accolades including the Medal of Valor from the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Dignitas Humana Award from St. John's School of Theology.

The Graduation Ceremonies

The upcoming commencement will include two ceremonies: the undergraduate ceremony begins at 10 a.m., followed by the graduate ceremony at 3 p.m. Collectively, the University of Bridgeport plans to confer over 1,400 degrees across numerous disciplines.
