Preview of Kyosuke Tchinai's Exhibition in Paris
Kyosuke Tchinai, a prominent contemporary artist, will be showcasing about 15 new pieces at a preview exhibition in his hometown of Warabi, Saitama. This exhibition comes as a prelude to his upcoming solo show at the Tamenaga Gallery in Paris this fall. Tchinai, who has taken on the role of president of the Cultural Association in Warabi, invites art enthusiasts to experience his latest creations before they make their international debut.
The preview exhibition, titled "Preview of Kyosuke Tchinai's Exhibition in Paris," will take place at the Warabi City History and Folklore Museum. Visitors will have the chance to enjoy Tchinai's works, which he describes as being inspired by the theme of "Hiten"—a mystical entity representing the spread of Buddhist teachings throughout the world. This unique theme has characterized Tchinai's work in recent years, culminating in his ninth exhibition in Paris since he started showcasing his art in the city back in 2002.
Tchinai's art is celebrated for its fantastical quality, utilizing a distinctive technique that combines washi paper with acrylic paints. He draws inspiration from traditional Japanese motifs such as textiles and natural elements, earning him accolades both in Japan and internationally. Notably, his creations are held in the collections of prominent figures, including former professional tennis player Roger Federer and the Rothschild family, well-known collectors within Europe.
The exhibition will be held from May 20 to June 4, 2026, with opening hours from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM (closed on Mondays and public holidays). The lecture event is scheduled for May 23 at 1:30 PM, providing an opportunity for deeper engagement with Tchinai's artistic vision.
Kyosuke Tchinai was born in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture in 1948 and graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. After relocating to Warabi for his studies, he became deeply integrated into the local community, taking on the role of chairman of the Warabi Cultural Association in 2014. His artistic journey is marked by numerous accolades such as a special prize at the Yasui Prize Exhibition in 1987 and recognition at the Ueno Royal Museum’s Oil Painting Grand Prize Exhibition in 1983.
Besides his artistic endeavors, Tchinai is involved in civic initiatives, having established the Kyosuke Tchinai Foundation in December 2024, in collaboration with Imabari City and Imabari Meitoku Junior College to boost local involvement in the arts.
Tamenaga Gallery, founded in 1969 in Ginza, has played a pivotal role in the art scene, promoting various genres from Impressionism to contemporary art. The gallery has expanded its presence internationally with galleries in Paris, Osaka, and Kyoto. In September 2025, it plans to move to a new space in Minami-Aoyama, tripling its exhibition area to further enhance its offerings.
Tchinai's exhibition is set to open in the Paris location of Tamenaga Gallery afterward, located at 18, Avenue Matignon, 75008 Paris, France, thus continuing the legacy of attracting and showcasing exceptional talent from around the globe. This upcoming exhibition is highly anticipated, not just for Tchinai's works but as part of the gallery's expanding mission to bring more Japanese artists to the forefront of the world art stage.
