Volvo Construction Equipment Unveils ECR355 in Japan
Volvo Construction Equipment, a subsidiary of the Volvo Group, launched its latest 36t class compact excavator, the ECR355, at the CSPI-EXPO on June 17. This marked their first standalone exhibition at the event, taking a strategic step to establish a stronger presence in the Japanese market.
The ECR355 is designed specifically for projects in urban redevelopment and demolition sites where space is limited. It strikes a balance between high operational capacity and enhanced safety with its rear swing radius, making it ideal for tight environments. Moreover, it features an advanced AI deep learning-based detection system for recognizing people and obstacles, along with improved cabin space and cooling systems to ensure operator comfort and environmental performance. This machine embodies Volvo's commitment to innovation in construction.
A New Era at CSPI-EXPO
During its exhibit at CSPI-EXPO, the ECR355 was formally introduced with a revealing ceremony. Following the event, the first purchaser of the ECR355, Takayama Building Materials, received the key in a special presentation. Joakim Arndorw, the regional manager for Volvo Construction Equipment in Asia, delivered a detailed product presentation, emphasizing the advanced features and capabilities of the excavator.
The Challenges Facing the Japanese Construction Industry
The construction industry in Japan is on the verge of a significant transformation. Starting in April 2024, the implementation of strict limits on overtime labor will necessitate greater efficiency in construction projects. Furthermore, recent amendments to the Off-Road Law have introduced stricter emissions regulations for construction machinery. With the ongoing labor shortage, the demand for improved safety on construction sites is also growing every year. In light of urban redevelopment and aging infrastructure, high-precision excavation techniques in confined spaces are becoming increasingly vital.
Volvo Construction Equipment is committed to leveraging technologies developed for passenger cars and trucks for the benefit of the construction sector, helping clients address their specific needs and challenges with innovative solutions.
Key Features of the ECR355
1.
Enhanced Fuel Efficiency
Equipped with the new Volvo D8M engine, the ECR355 achieves a 7% improvement in fuel economy thanks to an advanced electro-hydraulic control system and a newly designed main control valve. The engine's RPM has been lowered from 1,800 to 1,600, leading to reduced noise and vibration levels. Additionally, the intervals for changing hydraulic oil have been extended to 3,000 hours (1.5 times longer than previous models), resulting in lower operational costs.
2.
Volvo Smart View
This unique system integrate 360-degree camera views with high-precision radar, employing deep learning technology to automatically identify people and objects. Real-time alerts notify operators, significantly enhancing safety and embodying Volvo's commitment to achieving zero accidents on job sites.
3.
Improved Operator Environment
Although the ECR355 is designed for tight turning, it boasts a cabin that is 20% larger than previous models. It features enhanced cooling performance by 50%, ensuring operator comfort during extended work hours. Standard equipment includes an electric joystick and a 12.8-inch full HD touchscreen display (Volvo Co-Pilot, second generation), with options for semi-automatic excavation assistance using Volvo Active Control.
4.
Volvo Active Control
This optional semi-automatic control system facilitates features such as automatic grading, depth and height limits, and swing fences. Coupled with a kinematic sensor package, it allows operations to maintain consistent quality without requiring extensive training, thus supporting skill standardization in an industry facing severe labor shortages.
