Revolutionizing Warehouse Operations: Rapyuta Robotics' PA-AMR Model Makes Debut in Yokohama

Revolutionizing Warehouse Operations with Rapyuta Robotics

Rapyuta Robotics, a Tokyo-based company specializing in robotics solutions for logistics, has recently deployed its large-capacity picking assist robot, the Rapyuta PA-AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robot), at the Yokohama Product Center of Keihin Delivery, which is based in Yokohama, Kanagawa. This initiative marks a significant stride towards alleviating the dependence on human expertise in warehouse operations and enhancing overall efficiency.

Background of the Implementation

In recent times, Keihin Delivery faced challenges stemming from high reliance on experienced staff for shipping tasks. The company struggled with onboarding new employees and temporary workers, who required extensive training to become effective in their roles. Furthermore, an increase in labor shortages has intensified the operational pressures on existing staff, making it imperative for the company to seek innovative technological solutions.

After a short proof of concept and productivity simulation, Keihin Delivery opted to integrate the Rapyuta PA-AMR model to standardize operations, diminishing the reliance on individual expertise.

Key Features of the Rapyuta PA-AMR Large Capacity Model

1. Efficiency through List Scanning: The PA-AMR employs a list scanning method, allowing operators to scan barcodes on pre-printed forms that include shipping numbers and picking IDs. This means the order of operations can be adjusted flexibly, eliminating the need for a manual verification process - significantly reducing errors and time waste.

2. Multi-Order Picking Reduces Travel Distance: This new model can carry up to four 30L containers, enabling the simultaneous picking of multiple orders while minimizing the walking distance for operators. Compared to the old method, which required consolidating multiple orders into a single 60L container, the PA-AMR's design allows for more efficient concurrent operations across four locations.

3. Ambitious Productivity Goals: Combining multi-order picking with reduced travel distances aims to double productivity relative to previous levels. This enhancement will help compensate for the labor shortages while ensuring stable shipping operations. The ongoing analysis of operational data, productivity by worker, and adjustments to settings will contribute to a continuous improvement cycle aimed at quantifiable progress.

Future Collaborations and Expectations

Officials at Keihin Delivery, including Akihiro Wakao, Leader of the Logistics Planning Team, have expressed that overcoming reliance on individual task execution is crucial for their operations. The introduction of the Rapyuta PA-AMR model is expected to create an environment where even novice workers and temporary staff can efficiently contribute.

Masumi Inomata, the Sub-Leader of the Product Management Team, emphasized the importance of consistent enhancements in productivity and operational efficiency. They noted that prior to the PA-AMR integration, they were facing stagnation in productivity gains. However, through careful implementation guidance from Rapyuta Robotics, they have witnessed substantial improvements, increasing from 35 LPMH (Lines per Minute per Hour) to 79.5 LPMH.

Moving forward, Keihin Delivery plans to harness the capabilities of the Rapyuta PA-AMR model to tackle various logistical challenges and improve overall productivity.
