This year's festival, running from October 24 to 29, has pulled together 57 mobile films from 21 countries, showcasing the growing phenomenon of mobile cinematography.

As technology continues to advance, the art of filmmaking using smartphones has become a vital force in the creative landscape. The festival is focused on the convergence between mobile imaging technology and artistic expression, serving as a global platform for creators to connect, collaborate, and push the boundaries of mobile filmmaking.

Festival Highlights

The event features numerous activities including projections, academic panels, and intercultural exchange programs held at prestigious venues like ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) and Federation Square. On October 24, ACMI hosted the International Mobile Innovation Screening, highlighting 14 films from 12 countries including Chile, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Nigeria, China, and the United Kingdom.

From October 27 to 29, the spotlight will shift to Federation Square featuring 43 mobile films across special sections such as New Voices, Creative Category, and EcoSmartphoneFilms, as well as the innovation segment titled "Youth United Will Never Be Defeated."

SmallRig’s Contributions

In conjunction with the festival, SmallRig has unveiled the Mobile Filmmaking Co-Creation Initiative, a global platform aimed at integrating content creators into specialized tool development, encouraging notable mobile film productions, and fostering collaborations on original projects. This initiative aims to broaden access to equipment, exposure, and creative partnerships across over 160 countries.

Beyond the film screenings, the festival offers a series of networking events. A roundtable discussion on October 24 gathers mobile storytellers, smartphone filmmakers, and industry professionals to explore emerging trends in cinematic storytelling, with discussions around generative AI and computational creativity.

"The accessibility of smartphone cinematography allows for more impactful storytelling in a more intimate and personal way," expressed Zhou Yang, founder of SmallRig. He pointed out that professional camera accessories have enabled mobile recording to become integral to everyday creation. "SmallRig continues to innovate with lightweight, integrated solutions for mobile filming that empower creators, making cinematography more personal and universal," he added.

Originally established in Australia, the International Smartphone Film Festival has dedicated 13 years to promoting mobile film culture, supporting diverse creative expressions across narrative, non-narrative, and experimental genres.

The Rise of Smartphone Filmmaking

Smartphone filmmaking is revolutionizing storytelling with its portability, affordability, and rapid technological advancements, creating more avenues for innovation and inclusion in content creation. The interest in producing films using smartphones is surging rapidly among creators globally. The festival's founder, Max Schleser, noted a staggering increase of 97.56% in submissions from 2024 to 2025, showcasing the growing impact of mobile cinema on creative industries.

This festival serves as a vital window into the future of mobile recording by marrying academic engagement with public participation through screenings, industry discussions, and hybrid online-offline events.

The International Smartphone Film Festival stands as the longest-running event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, dedicated to promoting smartphone cinematography and mobile media production worldwide. The festival highlights works made using smartphones, mobile devices, and compact cameras, featuring moving image art, documentaries, community storytelling, and experimental cinema. Emerging media technologies such as drone cinematography, mobile augmented and virtual reality, and mobile AI also feature prominently.
