Origin Energy and Landis+Gyr Partner for Smart Gas Solutions in Australia

Revolutionizing Gas Services in Australia

In a groundbreaking initiative, Origin Energy, a prominent Australian energy provider, has teamed up with the global energy technology leader, Landis+Gyr, to introduce smart gas technology across Australia. This partnership aims to enhance the gas service experience for customers, resulting in reduced estimated bills, fewer manual meter readings, and an overall improvement in the management of gas services.

The Push for Digital Transformation

The project signifies one of the first comprehensive efforts in Australia to digitize gas network operations on a large scale. The initiative will cover households and businesses throughout Origin's gas service area. Over the next year and a half, Landis+Gyr will implement intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) modules that facilitate remote meter readings and provide near-real-time data insights, complemented by communications technology and an advanced data management platform.

Amber Fennell, General Manager of LPG at Origin, expressed her enthusiasm regarding the project, noting that this upgrade aligns with their focus on enhancing customer experiences. “This upgrade supports Origin's focus on improving the customer experience, while leveraging technology to make better use of existing infrastructure to help modernize Australia's gas networks. The upgrade will be delivered with no disruption to customers' LPG supply,” she said.

Enhancing Accuracy and Efficiency

One of the most significant advantages of this rollout is the improvement in data accuracy regarding gas consumption, which could lead to timelier billing processes by eliminating the need for manual meter readings. Fennell highlighted that this transformation will not only enhance customer experience but also ensure improved operational efficiencies.

Landis+Gyr's Senior Vice President for the Asia-Pacific region, David Maclean, emphasized the capability of their Smart Gas technology to provide utilities and energy service providers with an expedited pathway toward digital transformation. This transition will enhance service outcomes, promote safer installation practices, and optimize operational efficiency.

“This milestone represents a significant step forward in bringing intelligent, more flexible energy infrastructure to Australia,” noted Maclean.

Future Prospects and Broader Impact

By upgrading existing gas meters with Landis+Gyr's cutting-edge Smart Gas solution, Origin Energy is not only improving the current customer experience but also laying a solid foundation for long-term technological advancement. With approximately two million Landis+Gyr gas meters already installed throughout Australia, the potential for future expansions of this technology is considerable, promising remote meter readings and enhanced data insights at a larger scale without the need for extensive network replacements.
