Markel Strengthens International War and Terrorism Operations in the U.S. with Key New Hires

Markel Strengthens Its International War and Terrorism Division

Markel Insurance, part of the Markel Group Inc., has recently made a strategic move to bolster its International War and Terrorism division in the United States. This decision comes as the company looks to enhance its capabilities amid a complex and evolving global risk landscape.

Key Appointments Announced

On May 14, 2025, Markel announced the hiring of Joshua Watson as Senior Underwriter for War and Terrorism. In this pivotal role, Watson will focus on navigating and underwriting complex risk scenarios related to Stand-Alone Terrorism, Terrorism Liability, Strikes, Riots, and Civil Commotion (SRCC), as well as Active Assailant coverage. His expertise will also be key in promoting these offerings to brokers while strengthening Markel's relationship with its trading partners throughout regions such as Atlanta, Georgia.

Joining Watson is Bridget Canderelli, who takes on the role of Underwriting Support Specialist. Canderelli will play a crucial role in supporting the underwriting team, handling various administrative tasks like processing documentation and ensuring timely communication with brokers and key stakeholders.

Expertise to Drive Growth

Both Watson and Canderelli will report to Andrew Umphress, the Head of Terrorism for North America at Markel. Umphress expressed his enthusiasm for these new appointments, emphasizing the increasing complexity of the war and terrorism insurance market due to geopolitical factors. He highlighted Watson's extensive experience across various insurance products and his well-established relationships within the broker community as vital assets for Markel's strategic growth.

Watson brings over 14 years of experience in the insurance industry, with a distinct focus on cyber, terrorism, and political violence business lines. Previously, he held the position of Vice President and Senior Account Executive at Brown Brown Risk Solutions, where he managed a virtual office that specialized in high-risk scenarios including terrorism and kidnapping. His prior role as Client Service Executive at Sterling Seacrest Pritchard equipped him with leadership skills, enabling him to mentor new assistants and brokers and manage a substantial book of business.

Canderelli, although early in her career, has shown exceptional dedication to the Markel values. Her drive and commitment are expected to significantly enhance service delivery and support for brokers, ensuring high service standards are upheld across the board.

Why It Matters

In an era marked by escalating geopolitical tension and heightened risk exposure, the need for specialized insurance coverage in the war and terrorism sector has never been more critical. The market's intricacies necessitate responsive and knowledgeable underwriting teams capable of offering tailored coverage. Markel’s latest appointments underscore its commitment to maintaining a robust service for its clients while navigating the challenges posed by global events.

Watson is set to operate out of Markel's Alpharetta office in Atlanta, whereas Canderelli will be based in the Richmond office. Together, they will play a pivotal role in enhancing Markel's offerings in high-risk areas needing reliable insurance solutions.

As noted by Umphress, “The war and terrorism market is increasingly complex, driven by a multitude of geopolitical factors that impact clients’ risk exposures and insurance coverage internationally.” With Watson at the helm of underwriting and Canderelli at support, Markel aims to foster further profitable growth while providing its clients with the protection they need in volatile times.

In conclusion, these new appointments at Markel Insurance reflect a strategic effort to navigate a challenging insurance landscape and position the company for future success in an intricate global market.
