Experience Traditional Japanese Incense Crafting with Kougen’s Family-Friendly Workshop

A Unique Summer Experience for Families

This summer, Kougen, a renowned incense shop established in 1937, is hosting a special workshop designed for elementary students and their parents: "The Secrets of Scent! A Hands-On Workshop for Creating Scented Sachets." Taking place in Ginza and Ueno, this workshop encourages families to engage in Japanese culture while crafting their own unique scented sachets. As participants dive into the history of incense and the aromatic materials used, they can create a one-of-a-kind sachet that encapsulates their memories.

The workshop stands out this year with an exciting new feature: participants are encouraged to bring their favorite materials to incorporate into their creations. This addition not only enhances the crafting experience but also fosters a deeper, more innovative approach to their personal projects.

Kougen emphasizes the importance of connecting the younger generation to traditional culture through hands-on experiences. “I hope children can learn about Japan’s traditional culture,” says Kougen's president, Katsuhiko Kikutani. “We aim for them to create wonderful summer memories through incense.”

About Kougen

Kougen is a well-established incense retailer with its headquarters located in Nakamura-ku, Nagoya. The store extends its offerings beyond Nagoya, with branches in Ginza, Ueno, and Kyoto, showcasing over 5,000 types of incense products. In addition to their physical stores, Kougen has been a pioneer in e-commerce, launching Japan’s first online incense shop. The brand has also gained popularity for its collaboration with beloved anime, offering products that appeal to both locals and tourists alike.

Throughout the year, Kougen provides various workshops and experiences that celebrate Japan’s aromatic culture, including events like affordable high-quality agarwood experiences on Incense Day. Their mission is to relay the rich heritage of Japanese incense to the contemporary audience, ensuring the art is appreciated by future generations.

What to Expect During the Workshop

The workshop comprises several engaging activities, starting with a Q&A session about scented sachets, followed by foundational knowledge regarding incense materials. Participants will engage in the exciting process of creating their custom fragrances by combining ingredients like sandalwood and cinnamon. Once their unique scent is crafted, they can select their preferred bag and ribbon for presentation, culminating in the naming of their creation.

This hands-on experience not only enhances creativity and research skills but also allows for individual expression. By participating together, families build lasting memories and can bond over the artistic process, leaving a fragrant imprint of their summer adventure.
