The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation's Nationwide Initiative

In the U.S., sudden cardiac arrests (SCA) present a serious health risk, occurring more than 356,000 times each year. To combat this alarming statistic, the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation (SCAF) is taking significant steps this October during Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. They will once again roll out the “Ready to Respond” (RtoR) training program, aimed at equipping communities with essential lifesaving skills.

The campaign, now in its second year, is part of a broader movement aimed at raising awareness about SCAs and enhancing emergency preparedness across the country. According to Gina Peattie, the Executive Director of SCAF, “Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone, anywhere, at any time. When people are equipped with knowledge and skills, they can make the difference between life and death.” In 2025, the foundation hosted 97 training events, providing education to nearly 9,000 individuals. This year, more than 84 events are already scheduled, taking place in various settings such as schools, libraries, fire departments, and art galleries.

Training Program Highlights

At these events, participants will have the opportunity to learn vital skills such as performing hands-only CPR and using an AED (automated external defibrillator). Such training is essential considering that approximately 90% of SCAs are fatal when they occur outside of a hospital environment. Bystanders often serve as the first and sometimes only hope for survival. The foundation emphasizes the importance of immediate action in these situations.

Peattie explains, “This training could help save the life of a family member, coworker, or neighbor. Immediate CPR or AED use can double or triple someone’s chances of survival.” The program is free and open to both individuals and organizations looking to enhance their preparedness in emergencies.

Community Impact and Participation

Each event will feature local H.E.A.R.T. champions—trained individuals dedicated to promoting heart health—alongside SCA survivors who will share their stories and insights on the importance of immediate action during an emergency. This initiative not only educates but also fosters a sense of community, encouraging shared responsibility for one another's safety.

All members of the public are encouraged to participate. Attendees will gain confidence in their ability to respond effectively in emergencies, potentially making a life-saving difference when seconds count.

The Ready to Respond initiative is more than just a series of training sessions; it is a call to action that underscores the necessity of public education regarding SCAs.
