TMEIC Introduces the E-Tanker: A Mobile Charging Game Changer for Ports
In a significant move towards greener port operations, TMEIC Corporation Americas has debuted its innovative
E-Tanker, a mobile charging solution aimed at revolutionizing the electrification of diesel-powered port cranes. This groundbreaking technology, showcased at the TOC Europe trade show, promises to streamline the transition to battery-electric operations while minimizing infrastructure modifications and maintaining productivity.
Decarbonizing Ports with a Seamless Transition
The E-Tanker solution addresses one of the most pressing challenges of port decarbonization—the high fuel consumption of diesel-powered rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes, which can account for up to 75% of a terminal’s total fuel use. By converting these cranes to battery-electric power, TMEIC is making strides towards significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels.
"While conventional electrification methods require extensive yard redesigns and can lead to significant downtimes, the
E-Tanker introduces a more practical and accelerated approach," explains Suraj Mishra, TMEIC's Business Development Manager. This new solution allows ports to enhance operational efficiency without major civil work disruptions and costly grid upgrades.
Smart Features and Flexible Integration
The E-Tanker consists of several key components, including a mobile lithium-ion battery charging unit, high-energy battery blocks, and a sophisticated charging station—all integrated through TMEIC’s intelligent Fleet Management System (FMS).
- - Modularity and Flexibility: The charging unit, housed in a standard 40-foot container, can be easily transported by terminal tractors to serve multiple RTGs. Thus, ports can implement this solution flexibly without extensive modifications to the existing layout.
- - Real-Time Monitoring: Integration with the FMS allows for real-time tracking of yard operations. This includes monitoring the state of charge of batteries, job assignments for yard equipment, and charging schedules, enabling terminals to optimize asset utilization efficiently.
This setup ensures that even as operations transition to battery-electric systems, productivity and operational uptime remain unaffected, a critical factor for busy port environments.
Toward a Sustainable Future
As global shipping and logistics industries face increased scrutiny regarding environmental impact, solutions like TMEIC’s E-Tanker are essential. They not only make a palpable difference in reducing diesel consumption but also support the broader goal of green energy adoption in heavy industries.
Visitors to the
TOC Europe trade show from May 19-21 in Hamburg will have the opportunity to explore TMEIC's E-Tanker and other advanced port electrification solutions at stand E72.
